우리가 살아가는 이 공간은 인간과 비인간 행위자들 간의 다중적 관계로 구성된다. 행위자-네트워크이론은 이러한 점에서 두 가지 핵심적 유의성을 가진다. 즉이 이론은 인간 및 비인간 행위자들의 네트워크 또는 혼종적 결합체(아상블라주)에 관심을 두고 여러 유형의 이분법을 극복하고자 하며, 또한 다양한 행위자들의 네트워크로 구성되는 관계적 또는 위상학적 공간을 사유할 수 있도록 한다. 특히행위자-네트워크이론에서 제시된 위상학적 공간 개념은 다양한 행위자-네트워크들로 구성된 다중적 공간들을 이해하고자 하며, 이러한 위상학적 개념의 사례로네 가지 유형의 위상학, 즉 지역, 네트워크, 유동성, 화염의 위상학을 제시한다. 행위자-네트워크이론가들 외에도 다른 저명한 학자들도 위상학적 사유(예로 들뢰즈의 리좀 위상학이나 아감벤의 ‘예외공간’ 등)를 제시했으며, 이로 인해 위상학적 공간 개념들이 지나치게 다양하게 설정될 우려도 있지만, 이들과의 연계를 통해 더욱 확장·발전할 수 있을 것이다. 어떤 위상학적 공간 개념이 유의성을 가지는가의 문제는 이를 원용한 경험적 분석에서 어느 정도 발견적 통찰력을 가지는가, 그리고 실제 행위자-네트워크의 생성과 변화를 위한 실천을 어느 정도 추동할 수 있는가에 달려 있다고 하겠다.

The space where we live is constituted of multiple relationships between human and non-human actors. Thus actor-network theory has much significance at two points: that is, this theory leads us to overcome various types of dualism, giving attention to networks or hybrid associations (i.e. assemblages) of human and non-human actors; and it enables us to think about relational or topological concept of space with actor-networks. In particular, suggesting topological concept of space, actor-network theorists have tried to understand multiplicity of social spaces established with actor-networks, considering, for example, 4 types of topology, that is, of region, network, fluidity and fire. Despite some worries about overproducing topological concepts of space, we can elaborate further topological concept of space, by associating ANT’s topological concept of space with that of other theorists (for example, Deleuze’s topology of rhizome, Agamben’s concept of ‘space of exception’, etc.). In conclusion, it can be argued that the significance of any topological concept of space would depend on both to what extend it gives heuristic insights for empirical analysis, and how much it can pursue practices for forming and transforming of actor-networks.
