본고는 동양의 詩歌가 왜 교육적으로 중요한지, 공자의 詩敎를 통해 구명한 것이다. 시교를 논의하기 위해 敎의 문자적 의미를 살펴보면, 교는 이미 세계를 접촉하고 있는 학습자에게, 세상의 사물에 대해 공부하라고 교수자가 손짓하며 재촉하는 모습이다. 그런문자적 속성을 바탕으로 유교에서 교육은 늘 日常이라는 생활 세계를 벗어나지 않는다. 이때 교육의 핵심 내용은 六藝이다. 시교의 중심 내용인 詩經은 六藝를 가장 함축적이고 비유적으로 담고 있다. 詩敎는 사람의 마음을 나타낸 것으로 우주 자연과 인간 세계의 모든 일에 대해, 시에 농축되어 있는 내용을 마주하여 깨닫는 작업이다. 인간의 사상과 감정에 대한 기록인 노랫말을 통해 우주자연을 인식하고 삶의 세계를 파악하여, 보다 아름다운 세상을 꿈꾼다. 공자는 論語에서 두 가지 차원에서 詩敎정신을 구가하였다. 하나는 인간의 자기이해이자 개인교육의 측면이고 다른 하나는 사회 인식과 정치적 응용을 통한 공동체 교육의 측면이다. 인간의 자기이해 차원에서 詩敎는 敬을 통한 修己에 중점을 두는 깨달음이다. 그러나 詩敎는 克己와 같은 개인의 문제를 해결하는 데 그치지 않는다. 개인을 넘어 온 세상 사람들에게 해당하는 사회 전체의 규범, 제도, 체제 등이 건강하도록, 올바른 관계의 회복을 꾀한다. 공자가 강조하는 詩의 효용은 개인의 도덕적 수양, 사회 윤리, 정치외교 활동, 지식습득에 이르기까지 매우 광범위하다. 그 중점은 개인과 사회의 도덕적 敎化에 있다. 이런 점에서 詩敎는 인간교육이자 사회교육을 특성으로 한다. 그것은 間學問的 統合敎育이자, 소통의 敎育美學을 구현할 수 있는 교육의 양식이다.
This writing brings light on the educational importance of Oriental poetry through the poetry edification of Confucius. To discuss the poetry edification, the literal meaning of teaching is looked into and this takes an image of a teacher beckoning and pressing a student who are already in contact with the world to study about the objects of the world. Based on such literal property, the education in Confucianism never get out of the world of daily life. The core content of education here is Six Classics. The Book of Songs which is the main contents of the poetry edification contains the Six Classics most connotative and figurative ways. The poetry edification represents the mind of human and it is a work of facing and realizing the contents condensed in poetries regarding all the matters relating to the worlds of space, nature, and human. Through the lyrics recording the thoughts and emotions of humans, the space and nature are recognized and the world of life is identified to dream a beautiful world. Confucius admired the spirit of poetry edification in two aspects from The Book of Songs. The one aspect is about self-understanding and individual education of humans, and another aspect is the community education through social recognition and political application. In terms of a human’s self-understanding, the poetry edification is an enlightenment focused on the self-discipline through respect. But the poetry edification does not stop in resolving personal problems like self-control. It attempts to recover righteous relationship to restore the soundness of regulations, institutions, systems, etc. which are applicable to the people all over the world beyond individual. The usefulness of poetry that Confucius emphasizes are very extensive to the extent to include the person’s ethical cultivation, social morality, political diplomacy activities, and acquiring knowledge. The main focus is in the ethical edification of individual and society. Accordingly, the poetry edification is characterized as human education and social education. It is an interdisciplinary integrated education and also a form of education that can realize the education aesthetics.
