이 글은 선행연구의 문제점들을 염두에 두면서, 기존 논의와는 다른 측면에서 <도솔가>의 문학적 성격에 대해 논의하였다. 특히 선행연구에서 논란이 되어 왔던 ‘꽃’·‘미륵좌주’의 시어와 ‘日怪卽滅의 이유’ 등을 미륵삼부경과의 관련성에 주목하여 살펴보았다. <도솔가>는 미륵삼부경의 미륵 형상화와 미륵 친견의 방법 및 불국토 관념을 수용하고 있다. ‘꽃’과 ‘미륵좌주’는 『미륵상생경』의 ‘꽃자리 위에 앉아 있는 미륵’에서, ‘꽃’과 ‘자리’를 분리한 것에 다름 아니다. <도솔가>의 화자가 꽃에게 미륵좌주를 모시라고 명령한 것은, ‘꽃’과 ‘자리’의 결합을 의미하고, 이러한 ‘결합’은 미륵불의 출현을 강조한 것이 된다. 여기에, ‘오늘 이곳에(今日此矣)’의 노랫말까지 고려하면, <도솔가>는 지금 이곳에 미륵이 있음을 나타낸 것이라 할 수 있다. 그리고 미륵불이 지금 바로 여기에 있음을 노래한것은, 현재 이곳이 미륵이 머물고 있는 佛國土이고, <도솔가>를 짓게 한 경덕왕이 전륜성왕이라는 사실을 환기한 것이 된다. 곧 <도솔가>는 ‘꽃’과 ‘미륵좌주’의 분리·결합을 통해, 가창의 현장에 미륵이 존재하고 있음을 노래함으로써, 현재의 신라가 불국토임을 선언하고 있는 것이다. 그러므로 전륜성왕이 통치하고 미륵불이 常住하는 불국토에, ‘二日병現’과 같은 정치적·사상적 갈등으로 인한 국가적 위기는 있을 수가 없고, 설령 있더라도 사라지게 되는 것이다. 결국, <도솔가>는 ‘이일병현’의 국가적 위기 상황에 대한 문학적 대응으로, 불안과 두려움에 처해 있던 당시의 신라인들에게 현재의 이 땅이 미륵이 머물고 있는 불국토임을 선언한 희망의 노래라고 할 수 있다. 이상의 논의 결과는 <도솔가>를 경덕왕을 찬양하는 악장이나, 도솔천으로부터 미륵을 모셔오는 주술가요로 파악하고 있는 기존 논의와 차이가 있다고 하겠다.

This study discussed the literary nature of Tosolga from a perspective different from those in previous discussions, while keeping in mind the issues examined in the previous studies. In particular, this study paid attention to “flowers,” “ Miru k chwaju,” and the cause of the disappearance of the suns, focusing on their connection to the three major scriptures of Maitreya. According to the results of this study, Tosolga is a song about the manifestation (顯現) of Maitreya, reflecting the configuration of Maitreya, the method of experiencing the presence of Maitreya, and the idea of Buddha Land in the three major scriptures of Maitreya Buddhism. That is, “flower” and ‘Maitreya’ in Tosolga is the separation of ‘Maitreya seated on a flowery seat’ into ‘flower’ and ‘seat.’ The speaker of Tosolga commands the flower to attend Maitreya, and this means the combination of ‘flower’ and ‘seat’ and this combination emphasizes the manifestation of Maitreya Buddha. Moreover, it is sung that Maitreya Buddha is just here now, and this calls the reader’s attention to the fact that here now is the Buddha’s Land and King Kyongdok who had Tosolga made is a Wheel-Turning King. Therefore, in Buddha Land where a Wheel-Turning King rules and Maitreya Buddha is always present, there cannot be a national crisis caused by political and ideological conflicts such as the appearance of two suns, and even if such a crisis happens it disappears soon. In conclusion, the Tosolga was a literary response to the national crisis of the appearance of two suns. As such, it was a song of hope: it declared to the Silla people who faced fear and unrest, due to the celestial disruption, that Silla was the Buddha land where Maitreya resided.
