This paper aims to analyze the expressions (sequences of five morphemes) in newspaper editorials. Based on statistical and quantitative analysis, we extract morpheme-based 5-grams and collect characteristic expressions in editorials. The corpus used in this paper is the [Trends 21] Corpus, a large-scale Korean newspaper corpus compiled at Korea University. We analyze editorial texts from four major Korean newspapers(Chosun, Dong-a, Choong-ang, and Hankyoreh) published in 2000-2011. The size of the editorial corpus is around eleven million words. The results show that the most common expressions are of a judging type, including ‘han-da (한다)’. Furthermore the headlines show the editor’s intentions indirectly by using the expressions of questions such as ‘ges-in- ga(것인가)’.
