이 연구는 여러 기관에 산재된 『제국신문』 원 자료를 수집하여, 신문에 실린 시가 자료를 일차적으로 정리하고, 『제국신문』 소재 시가의 자료적 가치를 해명하는 것을 목표로 한다. 『제국신문』 소재 시가는 그동안 다른 매체 소재 시가에 비해 연구자의 주목을 받지 못하였다. 그 이유는 상당 부분 일차 자료 확보의 어려움에 기인한다고 할 수 있다. 이 연구에서는 『제국신문』이 근대 초기 계몽언론 중 가장 오랜 발행 실적을 가진 한글 신문이며, 한글을 통한 다양한 언어·문화적 실천을 시도해왔다는 점에 주목하고, 여기 수록된 시가가 공적 담론의 장에서 활용되는 방식을 해명하고자 한다. 『제국신문』 소재 시가는 전통적 악장의 전통을 지키고 있는 의전용 가사에서부터 시사단평 류의 가사, 시조창 형식을 유지하고 있시조와 창가, 언문풍월, 민요조에 이르기까지 다양한 시가 양식을 게재하고 있다. 이 연구에서는 특히 ‘시사논평형’ 시가를 중심으로 『제국신문』 소재 시가의 의미를 탐색하였다. ‘시사논평형’ 시가를 주목한 이유는, 『대한매일신보』의 ‘사회등 가사’ 이전에 시가가 근대 공론의 장에 시가가 어떤 방식으로 진입했는지, 그 자취를 밝히는 데 유효한 방식이라 보았기 때문이다. 나아가 ‘시사논평형’ 시가의 게재 경위와 담화전략 분석을 통해 『제국신문』 소재 시가의 특이성과 매체와의 관련성을 해명할 수 있는 가능성을 타진해 볼 수 있다. 『제국신문』 소재 시가는 가창의 전통이라는 기반 위에 감정의 노출을 통해 상대를 설득하는 설득의 기술을 구사하거나 독자들의 집단적, 정감적 반응을 이끌어내는 구어를 활용하고 있다. ‘시사논평형 시가’의 이러한 담화 전략은 정도의 차이는 있지만 『제국신문』 뿐 아니라 저널리즘 소재 시가에서 시의적 주제를 효과적으로 전달하기 위해 시도되었던 담화 방식이라 할 수 있다. 구어의 효과를 살린 ‘시사논평형’ 시가의 담화 전략은 두말할 나위 없이 근대담론에 의해 전근대적, 정념적, 비합리적, 비주류적인 것으로 폄하되었던 덕목이라 할 수 있다. 이 연구에서는 가창의 전통을 일정 부분 계승하면서 한글 중심, 구술언어 중심으로 이루어진 『제국신문』 소재 시가의 분석을 통해 근대를 향한 다양한 통로를 확인하는 한편, 지식인 중심, 서구 중심, 활자 매체 중심으로 근대를 이해하던 방식에 의문을 제기하고자 하였다.

The purpose of this study is to collect source materials of the Jekuk Sinmun (The Empire Newspaper)distributed in various organs, classify the material works of classical poetry shown in the news papers and explain the value as material of this media in cultural historical perspective. The poetry appeared in the “Jekuk Sinmun (The Empire Newspaper) haven`t drawn attention from the researchers compared with other media materials. The reason for this can be attributed to the difficulty to obtain the primary source in large part. In this study, I`d paid attention to the fact that “Jekuk Sinmun (The Empire Newspaper)” had been representative Hangeul newspaper with the longest published results in the early modern era and had attempted diverse cultural.linguistic practice with Hangeul and tried to explain how the poerty appeared in this newspaper had been being utilized in the field of public discourses. From the majestic poetry used in the court ritual to the vulgar songs sung on the civil street, diverse forms of poetry was seen on the page of the “Jekuk Sinmun (The Empire Newspaper)” In this study, I`d specially inquired into the meaning of the poetry in the “Jekuk Sinmun (The Empire Newspaper)” with a focus on the poetry on the current issue. The poetry on the current issues have showed efficiently how the poetry had been combined with the journalism prior to the launching of “Daehanmaeilsinbo (The Korean daily newspaper)” and entered the modern public sphere. In addition, I`ve expected the specificity of the poetry appeared in the “Jekuk Sinmun (The Empire Newspaper)” could be found through this study. The analysis showed that the poetry on the current issues had drawn the collective reaction by utilizing the spoken language.
