알렉상드르 코제브는 헤겔적 역사의 종말 이후 ‘미국형 동물’과 ‘일본형 속물’이라는 두 가지 유형의 호모 사피엔스가 등장했다고 언급한바 있다. 여기서 헤겔적 역사란 인간이 자신의 환경/자연을 변증법적으로 부정하고 이를 객체화시킴으로서 역사의 주인/주체가 되는 과정을 뜻한다. 코제브는 2차 세계대전 이후의 물질적 풍요 속에서 소비자로서의 욕망이 충족되어 자신의 환경에 만족하고 사는 미국인들이 동물처럼 자연/환경과 조화를 이루며 산다고 보았고, 이와 달리 일본에서는 삶과 예술에 있어 내용보다는 형식에 우위를 두고 사는 속물형 인간이 도래했음을 목도한 것이다. 최근에는 한국에서도 신자유주의 경제 체제 하에서 코제브적 동물과 속물이 새로운 사회 주체로서 부상했음을 논의하는 움직임이 있어왔다. 본고는 이러한 논의들을 가지고 두 편의 2012년 한국영화 <화차>와 <건축학개론>의 주요 캐릭터들을 분석하고자 한다. 두 영화의 남녀 주인공들은 코제브적 동물과 속물이 결합된 면모를 보이기도 하지만, 젠더화되어 있기도 하고 경제적 위계질서에 예민한 인물들이기도 하다. 따라서 영화 속의 젠더화된 동물/속물적 캐릭터를 중심으로 본 논문은 21세기 한국 사회에서의 인간성과 동물성의 의미에 대해 고찰할 것이다.

Alexandre Kojeve has posed two types of homo sapiens, namely American Animal and Japanese Snob after the end of the Hegelian History that is supposed to be a process of a human becoming a subject/master who has to enslave the object/Nature. While American Man is in harmony with his surroundings/nature just like animal in his satisfaction of Desire as a consumer in the material abundance, often observed in Japan is snobbery of predominance of form over content in art and life. In the era of neoliberal economic system, Kojevian post-historical animal and snob began to be oft-discussed discursively in relation with the rise of new South Korean subjectivity. Resting on these South Korean discussions on snob and animal via Kojeve, this paper analyzes the main characters of two 2012 South Korean films, Helpless and Archetecture 101. The characters of the two films not only show the syncretism of Kojevian snobbery and animality but are also gendered and economically hierarchized. Focusing on these gendered snobbery and animality, it also seeks the meaning of humanity and animality in South Korean society of the twenty first century.
