이 연구에서는 귀국 학생의 국어 화법 능력과 학교 적응의 관련성을 탐색해 보고, 귀국 학생의 국어 화법 수행에 나타난 문제점을 살펴본후 이들의 화법 능력 신장을 위한 교육 방안을 제안하였다. 이 연구에서는 귀국 학생의 한국어능력을 언어 손실 정도에 따라 한국어 유지 단계(1유형), 학습 한국어 손실 단계(2유형), 생활한국어 손실 단계(3유형), 기초 한국어 단계(4유형)로 구분하고 이들 유형별로 학교 적응과 국어과 듣기·말하기 학습 능력에 대하여 살펴보았다. 이 연구에서 귀국 학생의 화법 수행을 살펴본 결과, 토론 기능의 미숙, 공식적 말하기 기능 미숙, 일반적 말하기 기능 미숙, 문장 구조, 사고를 표현하는 능력 부족, 어색한 비언어, 준언어 표현, 자신감의 부족등의 문제점이 나타났다. 따라서 귀국 학생을 위한 국어과 화법교육은 수준별 교육의 관점 하에 귀국 학생의 담화 유형 학습에 결손이 있는 부분을 점검해보고 이에 대한 보충학습을 제공하여 화법 능력 신장이라는 목표를 달성할 수있게 해야 한다. 뿐만 아니라 귀국 학생에게 맞는 화법 교수-학습 내용과 순서의 재구성이 필요하다. 이 밖에 귀국 학생의 공식적 말하기능력을 신장하기 위해 수행 경험의 확대, 계획적인 과제 부과, 교사의관심과 긍정적 피드백 등이 필요하다.

The present study investigated the association between Korean speech proficiency and school adaptation of the returnees from abroad. It also explored the issues of their Korean speech performance and suggested appropriate plans for educating them to improve the speech proficiency. The study graded their Korean competence into four levels - maintenance level (type 1), loss of Korean for learning (type 2), loss of Korean for living (type 3) and basic Korean level (type 4). It investigated the school adaptation and Korean speaking-listening competence for the four levels. Analyzing the speech performance of the returnees exhibited immaturities in debate skill, formal speech skill, general speech skill, expression of their thinking, awkward non-verbal or para-language expression and loss of self-confidence. Therefore, the speech education for the returnees must check the loss of learning of the discourse type in terms of education by level and provide supplementary education in order to reach thegoal of improving speech capability. Besides, it also needs to restructure the contents and sequence of the curriculum for speech communication.
