본 논문에서는 근대계몽기 국어 교과서 속 삽화의 실상을 살펴 교과서 삽화의 기능을 분석하고 삽화를 통해 드러나는 근대 초기 국어교육의 모습을 추출하였다. 근대계몽기 국어 교과서 16종 중 삽화가 수록된 교과서는 10종이다.근대계몽기 국어 교과서의 삽화는 단원 본문의 내용을 구체적 사물과장면 등으로 시각적으로 재현하거나 단원 본문의 내용에서 사라진 채문면 아래에 감춰진 가치를 이미지 텍스트로 육화함으로써 학습자에게 근대적 시각 경험을 제공하고 있다. 국어 교과서 삽화는 근대계몽기의 당대 사회를 반영하는 풍속도로 기능한다는 점에 착안하여 삽화를 통해 드러나는 근대 초기 국어교육의 모습을 읽기 교육과 쓰기 교육으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 중세의 독서 관습과 근대에 새롭게 도입된 독서 환경이 혼합된 상황에서 방에서, 길거리에서, 교실 안에서, 교실 밖에서, 눈으로, 귀로 책을 읽는 다양한 독서 삽화가 제시되었던바, 이러한 독서 관련 삽화를통해 독서 태도 교육이 강조되었던 사정을 읽어낼 수 있다. 쓰기 교육 관련 삽화는 상대적으로 적은 양이지만, 근대식 필기구보다는 전통의 필기구인 붓, 벼루, 연적 등의 사용법이나 초학자의 습자와 고학년의 작문 모습을 형상화한 경우를 찾아볼 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to examine illustrations in Korean textbooks in the period of Modern Enlightenment. From the viewpoint of relations between a text and an illustration in Korean textbook, there are functions of illustrations, which visualize contents in the text, which supplement absent information in the text and which get into an ideology of gender role stereotyping. Illustrations show various reading situation that a student reads aloud a book in a room, a boy reads a book with a horse on a road, many students pay attention to reading books in a classroom and a herdboy listens lessons carefully outside of a classroom. They emphasize importance of reading attitude education and learning by reading a book on early Korean education in the period of Modern Enlightenment.
