이 글의 목적은 제주문학관 건립 필요성을 살피고, 향후 제주문학관 조성과 운영의 기본 방향을 대략적으로 제시하고자 하는 것이다. 우리나라의 경우 지방자치제의 전면적인 실시에 힘입어 문학관 설립이 활발하게 진행되면서, 현재 전국적으로 60여 개의 크고 작은 문학관이 조성되어 있다. 그러나 전국 광역 자치단체 시.도를 기준으로 그 분포를 살펴보면, 최근 조성된 세종시를 제외하고 제주에만 문학관이 없는 실정이다. 현재 제주는 사라져가는 지역문학 보존 및 연구가 시급하다. 이를 위해서도 조속한 시일 내에 제주에문학관이 건립되어야 한다. 제주문학관은 늦게 태동하는 만큼 뚜렷한 목적과 성격, 운영방안을 기반으로 건립되어야 한다. 제주문학관의 목적은 문학관이 수행해야 할 기본적인 기능은 물론 제주지역 문화예술의 저변을 확대할 수 있는 거점 기관의 기능을 수행할수 있도록 설정해야 한다. 또한 제주문학관은 지역문학을 전체적으로 아우를 수있는 지역 종합문학관의 형태를 띠면서, 구체적으로는 지역문학박물관, 지역문학연구센터, 복합문화공간, 열린 공간이라는 성격을 갖춘 공간으로 조성되어야 한다. 이렇게 조성된 제주문학관은 향후 제주 문화산업의 기반이 되어 하나의 문화콘텐츠로 자리매김함으로써 제주 관광산업의 활성화에 기여하는 기관이 될 것이다.

This writing desires to examine the need to build Jeju literary house, and to suggest the basic direction of construction and operation of Jeju literary house approximatively. In case of South Korea, establishment of the literary houses is actively proceeded by an overall implementation of local governments, so at present, about 60 great and small literary houses are constructed on a national scale. However, if the distribution is examined according to the national metropolitan councils such as city and province, there is no literary house in Jeju except for Sejong-si constructed lately. At present, it is urgent to preserve and study the dying local literature of Jeju. For this, literary house should be constructed in Jeju as soon as possible. Jeju literary house should be constructed, based on conspicious purpose, characteristics, and methods of operation as this literary house emerges late. Purpose of Jeju literary house should be set up to fulfill not only basic functions of literary house but also a function of a base to expand the base of cultural arts in Jeju. In addition, Jeju literary house should not only be a local general literary house to embrace local literature generally but also be constructed as a space possessing characteristics such as local literary museum, local literary research center, complex cultural space, and open place. Jeju literary house constructed like this will be one of cultural contents by becoming a base of Jeju culturalindustry in the future, so will be the organ to contribute to an invigoration of Jeju tourism.
