최근 인성교육진흥법이 발효하면서, 인성교육은 우리 교육계의 명실상부한 방향이 되었다. 인성교육이 무엇인지 그 방법이 무엇인지에 대한 논의가 분분한 가운데, 본 논문은 인성교육의 핵심은 도덕교육이며 기존의 자유주의적 도덕교육의 방향을 공동체적 덕목교육으로 전환할 것을 요구하고 있다고 판단한다. 도덕교육에서 있어서 덕목 교육의 방향은 결코 새로운 것이라고 할 수 없지만, 자유민주주의 사회의 대학에서 이루어지는 덕목교육은 그 정당성과 가능성에 대한 학계의 진지한 성찰이 필요하다. 대학의 교양교육에서 도덕교육은 어떤 목적을 갖고 있는가? 그리고 그 목적을 실현하기 위한 구체적 교육방법은 무엇인가? 이 물음에 적절한 대답을 하지 못한다면, 대학에서의 인성교육은 단지 요란한 구호에 지나지 않을 것이다. 본 논문은 대학에서의 인성교육을 정당화할 수 있는 가능성을 맥킨타이어의 덕 윤리에서 찾는다. 맥킨타이어는 자유주의 사회에서 도덕성 상실을 신랄하게 비판하면서, 현대 사회의 도덕성 회복을 위해서는 덕의 실현으로서의 도덕교육이 이루어져야 한다고 주장한다. 그는 서사적 삶의 통일성을 덕의 실현을 위한 출발점으로 삼고 있는데 우리가 서사적 삶의 통일성을 통해 개별적 행위의 도덕적 의미를 확보하고 덕을 실현할 수 있기 때문이다. 따라서 대학에서 이루어지는 도덕교육으로서의 인성교육은 서사적 삶의 통일성의 달성을 목표로 삼아야 한다. 본 논문은 서사적 삶의 통일성을 달성하기 위한 방법의 하나로 교양교육에서 서사적 글쓰기를 제시한다. 이를 위해 실용적 글쓰기 능력 배양이나 논리적 비판적 사고능력 향상의 수단으로 자리매김하고 있는 기존의 대학 글쓰기 교육의 한계를 비판적으로 검토하고, 윤리적 글쓰기로서의 서사적 글쓰기의 가능성을 모색한다.

As recently Character Education Promotion Act comes into force, character education has become a de facto direction of our education. The contentious debates are going on about what Character education is and how such education can be practiced. This paper contends that the essence of Character Education is demanding that moral education is to switch the direction of the existing liberal moral education into the communitarianistic virtue education. The virtue education as Character education is never but it would be new, but if the virtue education at the university is to take place in a democratic liberal society, a serious reflection is needed for its legitimacy and feasibility. What purposes has moral education in colleges of liberal arts education? And what specific method for realizing the purposes? If you do not have an appropriate answer to this question, Character education at the university is not merely just a loud slogans. This paper pays attention to virtue ethics of McIntyre to justify the possibility of the Character education at the university. McIntyre has sharply criticized the morality loses in a liberal society, and argues that in order to restore morality in modern society a moral education should be the realization of virtues. He makes ‘the narrative unity of life’ a starting point for the realization of the unity of virtue, because we get the moral significance of individual behavior through the narrative unity of life and to realize the virtues. Therefore, moral education as Character education takes place in the university ought to aim to achieve the narrative unity of life. This paper presents a narrative writing in the liberal arts education as one of the ways to achieve the narrative unity of life. For this purpose, this paper critically reviews the limitations of practical writing education at university which aims for improving the logical and critical thinking skills, and explores the possibilities of self-narrative writing as a mean of Character education at university.
