이 논문은 <심청전>의 이본인 <몽금도전>의 제작배경을 검토하고, 문학적 양상을 살핀 다음, 그 의미를 문학사적인 측면에서 조망한 것이다. 논의 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, <몽금도전>의 제작배경과 작품의 경개를 살펴보았다. 이 작품은 1916년에 간행되었다. 이때는 극문학에서 구극과 신파극, 현대극이 함께 향유되었으며, 소설의 경우는 고전소설과 신소설, 근대소설이 어우러져 수용되었다. 그래서 동종 장르 간의 교섭은 물론 이종 간에도 장르교섭이 활발할 수 있었다. <몽금도전>은 바로 그러한 때에 창작되었기 때문에 장르혼용이 나타날 수밖에 없었다. 이러한 시대 상황 때문에 비현실적인 요소를 거세하고 실현 가능한 화소를 활용하여 작품을 형상하였다. 둘째, <몽금도전>의 문학적 양상을 살펴보았다. 이 작품은 근대계몽기의 작품이기 때문에 고전소설의 전통적인 작화에서 많이 벗어나 있다. 특히 당시에 성행했던 이웃장르의 특성을 받아들여 장르복합적인 양상을 보인다. 그러한 요소로 다음과 같은 것을 들 수 있다. 먼저 신성성을 부정함으로써 합리화를 지향하였다. 그리고 독백을 자주 활용하면서 의도한 사건이나 주제를 강조하기도 했다. 또한 대화자를 명기하면서 직접화법을 구사하였다. 마지막으로 서술자가 마치 변사처럼 기능하며 작품의 정취를 드러내고 있다. 이들은 전반적으로 극문학적인 특성과 무관하지 않다. 셋째, <몽금도전>의 서사기법과 문학사적 의미를 검토하였다. 이 작품은 기존의 고전소설 작법과는 달리 독특한 서사기법을 보인다. 실제로 앞에서 살핀 문학적 양상의 상당수는 극문학에서 일반적인 것이다. 그래서 이 작품을 두고 ‘연극소설’이라 명명한 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 이 작품이 제작되던 당시는 신구소설이 경쟁하면서 서로의 장처를 받아들였고, 마찬가지로 신구연극이 인기리에 공연되어 그것이 작품의 형상화에 영향을 준 것으로 보인다. 그래서 고전소설이 근현대의 극문학으로 변용되는 초기의 모습을 이 작품이 담지한 것으로 볼 수 있다.

This thesis is studied about creation background of Monggeumdojeon and its literary aspect, and then survey its meaning in literary history. To sum up, we discussed things as follows. First, it is examined making background of Monggeumdojeon and its outline. This work is made in 1916. It’s time to enjoy old-style play, melodrama and modern play together in dramatic literature. In novel, classical novel, new-style novel and modern novel are mixed and accepted. So not only negotiation of same genre bot also negotiation of other genre are appeared. Because Monggeumdojeon is made of this time, so genre mixing is showed naturally. Merely because of state of a period, it is only used realizable topic, and eliminated unrealistic things while taking into account modern times. Second, it is examined literary aspect of Monggeumdojeon. This work is made of the modern enlightenment period, so it is different from traditional making method of classical novel so much. Especially it accepted another genre to prevalent of those days, so it is showed complex genre characteristic. Such examples are as follows. First it is to eliminate sacred character, so it is to aim at rationalization. And to use monologue often, it is emphasized intended event or subject. And it is used direct speech to specify speaker and listener. Finally narrator is functioning like silent-film narrator, so the scent of work is revealed. These are not unrelated to characteristic of dramatic literature. Third, it is considered the narrative skill and the meaning of literature history about Monggeumdojeon. This work shows unusual narrative skill unlike classical novel. It is maintained narrative tradition, while it accepted an element of dramatic literature widely. Actually, many of literature aspects are so general ones in drama literature. So this work is named ‘dramatic novel’. The time that this work is made is competed for old and new novel, so each system is accepted. Similarly old and new dramas are running amidst rising popularity, those are influenced work formation. So the early figure that classical novel is dramatized play in modern times is showed. Namely this work is showed the early figure that classical novel is transferred the play of modern times.
