조선시대 여성들이 목숨을 내어놓으면서까지 열녀가 되고자 했던 것은 주지의 사실이다. 그런데 19세기 소설에는 이러한 여성들과는 상반된 인물들이 포착되기에 주목을 요한다. <절화기담(折花奇談)>의 순매, <포의교집(布衣交集)>의 초옥, <삼한습유(三韓拾遺)>의 향랑 등이 바로 이에 속한다. 이들은 결혼한 하층의 여성으로 당대 여성들(유부녀)에게 금기되었던 자유연애와 남성에게만 용인되었던 포의지교를 욕망한다. 나아가 욕망을 성취하기 위해 일탈을 감행하는데, 이들의 일탈적 행위는 실절을 수반함으로써 당대여성에게 강제되었던 열 관념과 정면으로 배치된다. 이들이 문제적일 수밖에 없는 이유이다. 순매는 이생과의 부적절한 만남으로 일탈하지만 자신의 현실적 상황과 욕망 사이에서 끊임없이 부유한다. 그러나 결국 실절한다. 순매에게 열은 사랑보다 우선하지 않았던 것이다. 초옥은 불륜 대상자인 이생을 위해 자신의 절개는 물론이며 목숨까지 내놓는다. 이를 정행이라 여기며 이생에게 열을 실천한다. 이처럼 순매와 초옥의 열은 기존의 열 관념과는 다른 의미로 이해되고 있는데, 이들에게 열은 사랑하는 이에 대한 진솔한 마음의 표현이며, 실천적 가치로 기능했던 것이다. 열에 대한 이들의 인식은 정절을 강요하며 여성을 교화하고자 했던 남성중심의 지배질서에 대한 문제를 제기하면서 조선사회에 심각한 균열을 일으킨다. 근대로 이행을 촉구하였던 것이다.

Women in the Joseon period wanted to demonstrate chastity by restraining and damaging their bodies, and even sacrificing their lives. Yet, 19th-century novels are noteworthy for featuring women who seem to have avoided the craze over “becoming chaste women.” These women include Sunmae in , Cho-ok in , and Hyangrang in . They are lower-class married women who risk being deviants by falling in love with men other than their husbands in order to satisfy their desires. Their deviation is problematic because it represents the desire for free love, which was a taboo for women at the time, as well as the desire for relationships with the lower class, which was only tolerated for men. Furthermore, their behaviors, accompanied by the failure to maintain fidelity were even more problematic in the sense that they were completely in contrast to the concept of chastity. Sunmae maintains fidelity and serves a single husband until she meets Yi-saeng, but when she meets and falls in love with him, she becomes unchaste. For her, chastity does not take priority over love. Cho-ok sacrifices her fidelity and even her life for her illicit lover Yi-saeng, and considers her behavior righteous. As such, the chastity of Sunmae and Cho-ok is understood in a new sense that is different from the conventional idea of chastity. The changing perception of chastity raises issues about the male-dominated order that required chastity and tried to reform women; it thus animates the transition to modernity by causing a severe rupture in Joseon society.
