The purpose of this study is to identify the meaning and aspects of transmission through the legend of Kim Bokseon who was famous for humor. Little has been known about the life of Kim Bokseon who lived in Dangjin, Chungnam. The tales of Kim Bokseon has been transmitted in literature adding contents to the record of Yigawon(이가원), and it was reported in 80s as an oral folktales. Kim Bokseon’s tales can be divided into 5 types. First, he is the character with insight who could foretell the future even though he was a person of low birth. Although he had insight on personal, social and national issues, his abilities were not utilized because he a person of low birth. Second, he was agile and strong. Some of his abilities were gifted but most of them were acquired by his efforts. Third, he was a man of talents and wisdom. But his talents and wits were used to solve problems negatively rather than positively because of the hierarchical social order. Fourth, Kim Bokseon was a wise servant who made fun of his boss. In these tales, they emphasized the wisdom of low class people and showed cruelty and lack of human kindness. Fifth, he was a patriotic person who defeated foreign enemies. It is the difference from the other types making fun of his bosses. As such Kim Bokseon’s tales are the lore containing wish to resolve their deep sorrow resulted from the ordeal of social classes through a character with abilities from the servant class.
