This paper will examine how a refutation strategy which is shaped by a type of a debate is working in a live broadcast of the debate. The study is carried out by 2 stages in order to be looked into thoroughly. First, by how the televised debates are classified? Second, how is a refutation strategy which is determined by a type of a debate developed in the aired TV-discussion and debate programs? It is a topic in a debate that could play in large to classify a type of a debate. There are two types of debates after analyzing the topics or issues being discussed in televised debates. One is a debate that aims at discussing a state of affairs and at seeking a solution for the issues. Another type of debates mainly focuses on working out whether a proposition that conducts a state of affairs is right or not. The former is termed as a Policy debate whereas the latter is named as a Non-policy or Value debate. A main feature of the policy debate is to refute a proposition of opponents’ insistence while that of the non-policy debate is to rebut a basis of opponents’ insistence. The research in the pages that follow could shed light on how a refutation strategy is formulated during the debates. First, a debater should figure out a type of a debate whose major determinant is a topic in debates. After that, the debater could expect how the other debaters react to the type of a debate in terms of the purpose of the debate- either a policy or non-policy debate.
