< A Report to an Academy > by Chung Chan is modeled on Franz Kafka’s work of the same name. Chung Chan’s work is exactly alike the work of Kafka in title, form and structure. Both complete the formal requirements of a report presented to an academy, and have an anthropoid reporter(narrator) not human. Chung Chan’s narrator is a chimpanzee, and Kafka’s narrator is a monkey. Both represent human society and desire through an anthropoid’s eye. In the meaning or the subject of work, however, Chung Chan’s work is different from Kafka’s. Kafka’s work has a question of self-examination about human beings. Chung Chan’s work raises a problem about the substance of human language. Further Chung Chan’s works reflects on self-examination about novels as a genre. It is because language is a substantial medium of novels. Practically in the work Chung Chan shows his interest in novels as a genre frequently and significantly through the narrator chimpanzee. In view of this, Chung Chan’s work shows both similarities to and differences from Kafka’s work. Kafka’s work is an allegory about problems in human liberty and suppression. Chung Chan’s work treats problems in human language, thought, and communication. Therefore Chung Chan’s work is a satirical novel. Ultimately, < A Report to an Academy > by Chung Chan deals with the existence and qualification of human beings. This work tells about the authority of human and problems in language in a way of borrowing Kafka’s work of the same name.
