‘Poetic drama’ in Korea first published in Sept. 1923. Poetic drama was born in the atmosphere of literary history in the early modern times. Though number of works were a few, they formed a phenomenon to some degree and such poetic drama has continued till now. Poetic drama has been always behind poems and general drama in Korea as well as in the West. This might be because it is difficult to realize creative intention to completely fuse poems and drama. This proves that it is difficult to create a new style, at the same time, this means stubborn character of literary style. If so, it could be said that poetic drama style has its own meaning because the style has endured poor environment and continued until now only in Korea. When looking at a glance on early time of Korean poetic drama in 1920s, it is clear that characteristic of poetic drama in fusion of poem and drama was considered, but it can be evaluated that character of poem is stronger than character of drama. This would be caused by unmature skill in creating drama according to viewpoint but it would be more reasonable to see it as transient phenomenon or era’s limitation to test poetic drama as a new style. Accordingly, it is natural to give high score for the artistic courage and experimental spirit of the artists in then times who willingly selected poetic drama style not already generalized modern poetry or drama, going beyond degree of completion of poetic drama. In conclusion, when we consider that the history of poetic drama has reached one century, their contribution should be assessed very high - poetic drama in Korea began by artistic curiosity of the artists who were deeply conscious for proper correlation between material and style.
