Critical Review of the Research Tendencies for the Learning Effect of Educational Comics

As the popularity of educational comics have grown since the early 2000s, number of researches interested in these particular comics have increased in parallel. Researches about educational comics can be placed under three categories; firstly the reasons of the success of educational comics and the analysis of its narrative characteristics, secondly the study of the general perception of educational comics, and lastly the learning effects of educational comics. Among these subjects, this study will explore the research tendencies for the learning effects of educational comics. The selected study object has its significance as though the expected effects of educational comics are minimal, they are still erroneously emphasized. This research will first analyze in what aspects previous researches have asserted the learning effects of educational comics, and later propose what expectations should educational comics fulfill in the future. In this purpose this study will in the first part take interest in the research results of the learning effects of regular comics. After affirming that most researches concluded that the comics`` form itself can create learning effects, it will then analyze researches on the learning effects of educational comics. At this point this study will show that though most of the studies had confirmed its effects, these positive results are in fact more due to a combination of comics making activities than the act of reading comics itself. Finally, we will suggest that educational comics should get rid of its pedagogical aspect and emphasize the necessity of viewing them through a regular artistic angle. This study in conclusion will strongly solicit educational comics to be transformed from a banal means of transmitting informations into a children``s comic that provides emotional abundance as well as a colorful perception and imagination.
