The purpose of this paper is to analyze the trend in writing style of prose from the late Ming Dynasty to the early Qing Dynasty, through deriving comprehensive understanding of Zhang Dai``s works. Zhang Dai left literature works in diverse genre over not only poem, but also play and academic prose, although he generally is well-known for Xiao pin wen. It is well revealed in his literary prose that various observations were described in detail, and he always put efforts on revealing the true face of the figures. Furthermore, he tried to expose his patriotic spirit as well as practical statecraft in historical works, and tried to popularize knowledge in academic works.
