레이첼 데이비스 뒤브와는 미국에서 그녀를 기억하는 많은 사람들로부터 상호문화교육의 창시자, 상호문화교육의 가장 탁월한 인물로 여겨지고 있다. 실제로 그녀는 1920년대에서 1960년대 사이에 미국에서 학교 조회활동과 집단대화 기술을 개발하고 확산시켰다. 그녀는 1935년 ‘상호문화교육’이라는 용어를 처음 공식적으로 사용하였고 다음 해에는 상호문화교육 지원센터를 설립하였다. 상호문화교육과 반편견교육의 혁신가로서 그녀는 미국의 음악, 과학, 문학 분야에서 다양한 인종 및 민족 집단들이 이룩한 업적과 기여를 널리 알려 주변화된 집단에 대해서 공감적인 태도를 가지게 하려고 노력하였다. 하지만 그녀는 미국의 다문화교육 학계에서 많이 기억되지 않고 있다. 이러한 의미에서 본 논문은 상호문화교육 운동을 위한 그녀의 투쟁사, 그녀의 유명한 학교 조회활동과 집단대화, 상호문화교육지원센터의 창설과 변화 과정을 살펴보고자 하였다. 본 논문은 또한 뒤브와의 상호문화교육 운동을 미국의 다문화교육과 유럽의 상호문화교육의 관점에서 현대적으로 재조명해 보고자 하였다. 그 결과, 뒤브와의 조회활동과 집단대화로 이루어진 상호문화교육은 미국의 다문화교육과 유럽의 상호문화교육이 혼재된 형태지만 굳이 따지자면 미국의 다문화교육보다는 유럽의 상호문화교육과 더 가깝다고 결론내릴 수 있었다. 우리가 이렇게 말할 수 있는 근거는 문화를 역동적으로 보는 것, 집단이나 개인 간의 관계를 중시하는 것, 다양한 집단이나 개인의 상호작용을 강조하는 것 등에서 찾을 수 있다.

Rachel Davis Dubois is considered by many to be the initiator of intercultural education as well as its most prominent champion, as she has designed and diffused school assembly programs and group conversation techniques throughout the United States from the 1920``s to the 60``s. She first used the term "intercultural education" in 1935 and created the Service Bureau for Intercultural Education one year later. As an innovator in intercultural and antiprejudice education, she tried to increase familiarization with the accomplishments and contributions of different racial and ethnic groups in America in the areas of music, science, and literature in order to develop sympathetic attitudes of students and adults toward these marginalized groups. But she is not much remembered today even in the field of multicultural education. Therefore, in this article I attempt to briefly present her life of struggle for the intercultural education movement, her famous assembly program and the creation and evolution of the Service Bureau for Intercultural Education. I also try to revisit Dubois’s intercultural education movement from the perspective of multicultural education of the United States and the intercultural education of Europe today.
