이 연구의 목표는 ‘이다’ 구문 가운데에 ‘나는 짜장면이다’류에 대한 새로운 관점을 제시하는 데에 있다. ‘나는 짜장면이다’류의 ‘이다’ 구문의 해석은 통사론이나 의미론의 영역이라기보다는 화용론의 영역에 속한다. 본고에서는 기존의 ‘나는 짜장면이다’류의 ‘이다’ 구문 해석에 대한 한계를 지적하고 최근에 제시된 두 가지 이론들을 비교하고 분석하여 좀 더 구체적이며 정밀한 설명을 시도했다. 먼저 Nunberg(1995; 2004)와 Ward(2004)의 이론을 영어의 ‘I``m the pad thai’ 문장을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 영어의 ‘I``m the pad thai’에 적용되는 문화적 배경이나 화용적 양상이 한국어의 ‘나는 짜장면이다’에 적용시키는 데에는 크게 무리가 없다. 이들 이론을 한국어 문장에 적용해 보았을 때에 어느 이론이 더 타당한 설명력을 보이는가는 검증해 볼 가치가 충분히 있다. 결론적으로 두 이론 가운데에 Nunberg(1995; 2004)의 이론이 더 설득력을 보여주고 있다고 보았다. Ward(2004)의 주장은 ‘이다’의 의미 변이에 의해 각각의 명사구가 집합의 의미를 가지게 된다고 하였으나 이는 ‘이다’의 의미 변이에서 원인을 찾기 보다는 두 명사구와 상황의 관계에서 원인을 찾는 편이 더 합리적이다. 특히 일치(identification)에서 상응(correspondence)으로 의미가 변화하였다는 것이 정확이 어떤 차이를 갖는지가 분명하지 않다. ‘나는 짜장면이다’ 류의 해석에 Nunberg처럼 NP2의 의미 전이를 받아들인다는 것은 결국 상황 의존적 ‘이다’ 구문(‘나는 짜장면이다’류) 역시 넓은 의미에서 속성 구문으로 분류할 수 있는 길을 열었다고 평가할 수 있다.

The purpose of the study is to suggest a new perspective on Korean ``ita`` construction. We considered three types of ``ita`` constructions in Korean, property, identification, situation-dependent. We reviewed two theoretical approaches to investigate the meanings of situation-dependent ``ita`` construction. Nunberg`s(1995; 2004) accounts of deferred reference have argued that all deferred reference is the result of meaning transfer, a shift in the sense of a nominal or predicate expression. In situation-dependent ``ita`` construction, meaning of NP2 is shifted according to domain of NP1. An analysis of deferred equatives suggests an alternative account based on the notion of pragmatic mapping by Ward(2004). mapping operation between two noun phrases is contextually licensed. Moreover, the use of a deferred equative requires contextually licensed open propositions. As a conclusion, Nunberg`s theory is selected to explain the mechanism of situation-dependent ``ita`` construction.
