Many studies have been commonly emphasized the importance of knowing how to deal with emotions in counseling theories. Most of the times, clients do not want to feel the painful emotions that accompany their daily life experiences so they try to avoid those distressing emotions as sensitization about their experiences. However, this method tend to bring about psychological maladaptation in the long term even though they might be helpful in adequately regulating emotions in the short term. To help these clients, the process of repeated emotional acceptance is essential in order to find out the meaning of painful emotions and understand desires behind emotions. They may temporally feel as if their negative emotions are intensified again in this process. But once the process of accepting emotions triggered by sensitized stimuli are repeated over and over again, the habituation process occur and bring about adaptation of clients in the long term. This study employed a literature review to investigate the roles of emotional activation and repeated emotional acceptance in the counseling process of dealing with emotions. The rationale behind the previous studies were different but this study sought to extract the core aspects of dealing with emotions in the pantheoretical standpoint, and explored how these aspects can bring changes in clients. The findings of the study add significant implications to the counseling process literature.
