The goal of the study is to compare life histories of ethnic Koreans in Japan and China, identifying ethnic traits in each country. Furthermore, this study tries to suggest the framework for understanding the Korean diaspora beyond the limit of an individual state. In specific, diverse experiences of the ethnic Koreans in China and Japan could represent typical life histories, since they make up a large portion of Korean migrants since the late 19th century. Thus, the study could suggest primary criteria for explaining the complex diasporic lives by mean of the narrative of migration and adaptation by the Korean diasporas since they are now scattered over a wide range of areas. Among the participants of the qualitative study are 34 ethnic Chinese and 15 ethnic Japanese who were interviewed in the field study. The result shows that there are large differences between ethnic Chinese and Japanese in such domains as language, ethnic identities, family composition, discrimination, and relationship with their homeland.
