모바일 및 클라우드 컴퓨팅의 확산에 따라 대형 데이터센터의 수요가 빠르게 성장하고 있다. 데이터센터는 대규모 투자가 필요하므로 정밀한 비용―편익 분석이 요구된다. 효과는 데이터센터의 총 수명 주기에 걸쳐 발생하므로, 비용 역시 데이터센터 수명 주기 내의 총 소유비용을 산출해야만 한다. 하지만 데이터센터의 총 소유비용 모델에 관한 연구는 매우 빈약한 상황이다. 본 논문에서는 총 소유비용의 관점에서 데이터센터의 경제성을 분석할 수 있도록 기존 문헌과, 데이터센터 운영 사례, 관련 전문가들의 인터뷰를 통해 수집한 정보를 바탕으로 건축비와 시설 설치 등 초기 투자 비용뿐 아니라 IT 설비의 주기적 교체와 유지보수 등을 고려한 데이터센터 총 소유비용 모델을 제시한다. 본 논문에서 제시한 모델은 데이터센터에 건축물의 특성과 IT 설비적 특성이 공존한다는 점을 고려해 수명주기 내의 다양한 투자 요인들과 운영 요인들을 종합적으로 포함하는 포괄적인 모델이면서도, 입력 변수는 적고 요인들간의 연결 구조가 단순한 편이기 때문에 IT 장비 구성, 전력사용효율성(PUE) 등의 상황을 반영하고 운영 정책에 따른 차이를 파악할 수 있게 해 주므로 유용하다 할 수 있다.

As the computing environment migrates toward mobile and cloud computing, the demand for data centers is growing very fast. Data centers possess characteristics of construction and IT infrastructure. Huge upfront investment is necessary for constructing a build-ing and purchasing IT systems, while significant additional investment should follow periodically to replace and upgrade the facilities and systems. Therefore, it is very important to perform a careful benefit-cost analysis when planning data centers. Since the benefit is realized over the life span of the datacenter, the cost incurred throughout the lifecycle of the datacenter (i.e. Total Cost of Ownership or TCO) needs to be estimated. Despite high practical needs and importance, however, academic research on the TCO model for data cen-ters is very limited. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive and useful TCO model for data centers. The model does not require many input variables, and it is flexible and detailed enough to analyze the changes in total cost depending on the operational policy and power usage efficiency.
