이 글은 일제강점기에 발표된 백석의 시 작품들 중 중국문화에 대한 체험을 바탕으로 쓴 시 작품들을 논의하면서 중국문화의 시적 수용의 특성을 밝히고, 백석의 중국문화 수용에 따른 문화의식이 어떤 의미를 갖는지 고찰하고자 한 것이다. 백석의 시에서 시적 주체는 이방인으로서의 관찰자가 아닌 문화 참여자로서 중국문화를 수용하되, 주체의 다양한 감각에 따라 중국문화를 수용하고 있는 특성을 보여주었다. 특히 시적 주체가 체험하는 중국문화는 중국의 오랜 문화적 전통을 들여다보는 거울과 같은 기능을 했다. 이런 점에서 중국문화는 당대적인 의미를 갖는 동시에 과거의 중국문화를 추체험하는 의미를 지닌다. 백석의 중국문화의 수용 태도는 일단 양가적인 것으로 나타나지만, 세속을 벗어난 정신적 여유와 한가로움, 그리고 풍류를 지향하는 시인의 문화적 선호의식에 따라 중국문화를 긍정적으로 인식하고 이를 내면화하려는 경향을 더 강하게 드러내고 있었다. 백석의 이와 같은 문화 수용의 태도는 탈속의 여유와 즐거움을 추구하는 주체의 문화의식에 따라 중국문화를 선택적으로 수용했기 때문이다. 따라서 백석의 시에서 중국문화는 주체의 문화의식을 구성하는 중요한 요소로서 영향을 미치게 되며, 궁극적으로 주체의 문화의식을 스스로 고양하고 확대하는 데기여한 것으로 파악된다. 백석의 중국문화에 대한 실천적 참여와 긍정적 이해의 태도는 당시 만주국에서 중국문화를 폄훼 또는 배제하려고 했던 일제의 식민지 정책에 대해 비판적 거리를 두는 것으로 탈식민주의적 문화의식을 보여주는 것으로 평가할 수 있다. 그리고 오늘날 점차 다문화사회로 진입하고 있는 한국의 상황에서 백석의 중국문화수용 태도와 문화의식은 상호 문화적 이해와 공감의 태도를 보여주었다는 점에서 긍정적인 측면에서 시사하는 바가 크다고 말할 수 있다.

This thesis is an attempt to find out about how to accept and express poetically the different culture experience in China throughout the BaekSeok’s poems. Basically the poetic acceptance in difference culture is based on the subject of cultural acceptance aspect and attitude. Therefore I intensively considered the poetic acceptance aspect of different culture in China according to the aspect of cultural acceptance attitude from his works. Baek suk released 10 poems based on his exotic institutions and customs, life experience in Manchuria through traveling and immigrating from the end of 1930 to 1945. He didn``t put sense of distance or disparage Chinese culture as the other, but rather elevating it as an independent culture which has historic tradition as well as forwarding to elevate a way of culture and subject which has similar tradition. He proceeded to be self the other culture practically by participating directly in difference culture in China.
