본고의 목적은 한국 대학교에 재학 중인 외국인 유학생의 배경지식 확장을 위한 한국어교육 방안을 제안하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 외국인 유학생에 대한 교육과 정과 교육 내용에 대한 연구는 꾸준히 증가하고 있지만 다양한 전공, 방대한 교양교육의 범위, 그리고 외국인 유학생의 상이한 한국어 능력 등의 요인 때문에 외국인 유학생을 위한 교육과정과 교육 내용 마련에 어려움을 겪고 있다. 이에 본고에서는 한국 대학에 재학 중인 외국인 대학생의 요구 분석을 기반으로 학생들의 한국어능력과 배경지식을 확장하는 데 유용한 교육 방안으로 SIOP을 제안하였다. SIOP은 언어 수업과 내용 영역의 수업을 통합한 교실에 적용하기 위해 개발되고, 교실 사례 연구를 통해 그 효과가 입증된 모형이다. 본 연구를 위해 실시한 설문조사 결과 외국인 유학생들이 한국에서 공부하는 목적은 한국어능력 향상이라고 응답한 학생이 가장 많았지만 이러한 목표를 언어 수업만을 통해 이룰 수 있을 것이라고 생각하지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 이에 본고에서는 배경지식을 확장할 수있는 교양 수업을 SIOP 모델을 활용하여 설계해 보았다. 구체적으로는 배경지식을 활용하는 방안으로는 학습자의 관심사를 확인하여, 학습 목표에 반영하는 것, 본격적인 의사소통 활동 전 쓰기 단계를 두어 학습자의 사전 지식을 확인하기, 실제 자료의 사용과 시각화된 자료의 사용하는 방안을 제시하였다.

The purpose of this study is to suggest models to extend background knowledge as well as a command of the Korean language for foreign students at Korea University. Although research on the curriculum and syllabus for foreign students at Korea University is increasing, tangible results have not yet been prepared due to the diverse levels in the proficiency in Korean, the major they chose, and various types of elective courses. Therefore the SIOP model which could integrate content and language class effectively was selected as an appropriate teaching model for the students. The results of a survey that was implemented for this study shows that the students desire to acquire a good command of Korean but they wanted to take content courses rather than language courses at Korea University. This study establishes a lesson plan for the students which could extend their background knowledge and participation with visualized and authentic materials.
