본 연구는 일본의 특별지원교육 현황 및 대표적인 직업중점 고등특수학교인 시라가와(白河) 종합지원학교의 교육실천 내용의 특징을 고찰함으로써 우리나라 특수학교 재구조화에 참고할 만한 시사점을 제공하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 일본에서는 최근 직업자립을 표방하는 고등 특수학교가 늘고 있는데, 이는 2007년 특별지원교육으로의 제도전환과 더불어 국가적으로 진로교육을 강조하는 흐름이 특별지원교육에도 영향을 미치고 있기 때문이다. 시라가와 종합지원학교는 이러한 일본의 동향을 잘 나타내는 사례라 할 수 있으며 일본 국내에서도 성공적인 진로ㆍ직업교육으로 주목을 받고 있다. 문헌연구와 현장방문 및 인터뷰의 연구방법을 통해 본 연구에서는 일본 특별지원교육과 지적장애 진로ㆍ직업교육의 동향에 대해 고찰하고 시라가와 종합지원학교의 교육실천 내용의 특징에 대해 분석한 후, 이를 바탕으로 우리나라의 특수학교 재구조화에 시사하는 바를 논의하였다.

In this study, I examine the characteristics of the educational contents of the Shirakawa comprehensive support school, Japan’s leading special high school focused on vocational education, to provide implications for restructuring special schools in Korea. There has been a recent increase in the number of special high schools in Japan aiming to provide vocational training to students to help them live independently. This reflects the system change from special education to special needs education in 2007, as well as the nationwide trend of emphasizing vocational training in education. The Shirakawa school is an exemplary case that reflects this trend in Japan, and it has received much attention within the country for its successful provision of career and vocational education. Based on literature review, site visits, and interviews, I examine the trend of support for special education, and career and vocational training for students with intellectual disabilities, I analyze the educational content at the Shirakawa school, and I discuss the implications of this content for restructuring special schools in Korea.
