타자의 경험에 대한 인지가 공감의 전제라고 보는 입장은 회의론적 비판에 직면하게 된다. 공감에 대한 더 설득력있는 접근은 그것을 타자와 타자의 경험에 대한 태도로 보는 것이다. 만일 타자의 경험이 일상적 범위를 벗어나 트라우마적인 것에 접근할 경우, 공감은 거의 시련에 가까운노력을 요구한다. 이런 작업을 통해서 이루어진 공감은 타자의 고통스럽고 고립된 경험을 이야기를 통해 풀어내는 과정에 다름 아니다. 이 글은 광주민주화운동에 대한 한강의 소설, 『소년이 온다』를 사례로 삼아 이런공감의 서사적 과정을 분석한다. 더불어 이 소설이 광주민주화운동에 대한 정치학적 분석의 대표적 사례의 하나인 최정운의 『오월의 사회과학』과 매우 다른 통찰에 어떻게 이르게 되는지 살핀다.

The position that the cognitions of other``s experiences is the presupposition of compassion can be confronted with skeptical criticisms. A more plausible approach to compassion is to define it as a kind of attitude to the others`` personal experiences. The more other``s experiences come close to the traumatic, the more compassion requires strenuous efforts no less than ordeals. The compassion based on such efforts is destined to narrate the painful and isolated experiences of others. This paper aims to analyze the narrative process of compassion expressed through The boy is coming(Changbi, 2014) by Gang Han of which main theme is the traumatic experiences of Gwangju Democratic Movement participants. It tries to examine which kind of insights about Gwangju Democratic Movement The boy is coming reveals and show how different they are from the established analysis of political science exemplified by The Social Science of May of Jungwoon Choi.
