본 논문은 지난 20년간의 구성주의에 국내외의 연구동향을 살피고, 앞으로의 연구경향을 전망하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 국내·외의 대표적인 교육공학분야의 학술지에 실린 논문들과 새로운 학습환경을 소개하는 다양한 분야의 논문들을 분석하였다. 1991년 Educational Technology 紙가 구성주의를 특집기사로 다루면서 논쟁이 시작된 구성주의에 대한 연구들은 그 이후로 교육공학 분야의 중요한 연구주제가 되었다. 국내에서는 1994년에 구성주의 관련 논문이 발표된 이후 지속적으로 많은 연구논문들이 발표되고 있다. 발표된 구성주의 관련 연구들은 크게 1990년대와 2000년대 이후로 그 특징을 나누어볼 수 있는데, 1990년대에는 구성주의 자체에 대한 이론적·실천적 연구와 함께 매체의 교육적 활용과 구성주의를 관련짓는 연구가 이루어졌다. 이 시기에 국외에서는 구성주의에 대한 이론과 실제가 균형있게 논의되었고, 하이퍼미디어의 특성과 구성주의가 연계되어 논의되었다. 국내에서는 보다 실천 지향적 연구에 초점을 두고 여러 구성주의 모형들을 적용하는 연구들이 중심을 이루었다. 2000년대 이후에는 국내외 모두 이러닝의 이론적 기반으로서의 구성주의 연구가 진행되었는데, 국외에서는 구성주의가 온라인 학습환경의 이론적 기저로 다루어진 반면에, 국내에서는 이러닝의 교수학습 전략으로 다루어진 특징을 보였다. 지난 10여 년 간에 걸쳐 이루어진 구성주의 연구는 미래에도 지속적으로 연구되어질 것으로 본다. 이는 혁신적인 학습 테크놀로지의 배경과 디지털 시대의 Net 세대를 위한 학습환경으로 구성주의가 언급되고 있기 때문이기도 하며, 특히 새로운 학문분야로 탄생한 학습과학의 주요 이론적 배경으로의 하나로서 구성주의가 논의되고 있기 때문이다. 결국 앞으로의 구성주의는 이전, 혹은 새롭게 등장하는 학습이론들과의 연계 속에서 계속 확대, 발전되리라 전망해본다.

Along with socially urgent impetus for revolutionary reform of educational environments appropriate to the 21st century society, constructivism has been highlighted from various fields related to education as an alternative educational ideology and approach. Also, at the same time, it raised many issues and questions to address and discuss among scholars and practitioners due to its radical shift from the traditional learning environments. The novelty effect of the theoretical freshness of constructivism, whether it draws either on genuine interesting or on reluctant yet impulsive choice, had led people to immature practice based upon their incomplete understanding. Hence, constructivism comes up with misconception to see it as a teaching method or at best a teaching theory. This study examined how constructivism has been accepted and practiced in our current educational fields over the last decade. Then, next trends and issues of constructivism were proposed, followed by the retrospective analysis of the current constructivism. As for the research method of this study the meta-analysis on researches and studies related to constructivism was employed for the review of constructivism, while the preview of constructivism for another next decade was outlined based upon common themes and trends across society, culture, and education.
