이 글은 선진시대 가장 영향력 있는 두 사상가인 공자와 묵자가 제시한 개인과 공동체에 관련된 이론들을 통하여 개인선과 공동선의 관계에 대한 그들의 연계성을 분석해 내는 것을 목표로 삼는다. 공자와 묵자는 기본적으로 인간의 존엄한 가치를 존중하고 개개인의 행복 추구와 자아 실현을 중시하면서도, 공동체의 가치와 규범, 그리고 공공의 이익도 중시하였다. 즉 그들은 개인선과 공동선의 균형과 조화를 추구하였으며, 그들의 이론에는 다음과 같은 특징을 보이고 있다. 첫째, 공자와 묵자의 수신 이론이 지닌 본질적 특성과 목적을 비교해볼 때 양자 간의 구분이 쉽지 않을 정도로 유사한 측면이 두드러진다. 두 사상가 모두 개개인이 지닌 덕성은 사회의 질서 및 행복과 긴밀한 연관성을 지니므로 개인의 덕성 함양이 곧 공동체가 추구하는 공동선으로 연결된다고 보았다. 둘째, 공자와 묵자는 덕성과 재능을 겸비한 개인들이 이상적인 공동체를 만들며, 이들은 공동체를 주도하면서 공동체의 존망을 좌우하는 존재들이라고 생각하였다. 따라서 공동체가 덕성과 능력을 갖춘 개인의 성장과 실현을 보장해야 한다고 보았다. 개인은 공동체를 위해 헌신하고, 공동체는 개인의 가치를 존중함으로써 개인과 공동체 간의 유기적 관계를 도모하고자 한 것이다. 개인과 공동체의 바람직한 모습을 제시한 두 사상의 이론적 특징을 고찰해 볼 때 양자가 개인선과 공동선의 조화를 실현하는 과정과 방법에서 다소의 상이점을 보이지만 그 귀결점은 동일하다고 생각된다. 이는 개인과 공동체에 대한 양자의 주장이 내재적으로 긴밀하게 연계되어 있으며 상호 보완될 수 있음을 시사하는 것이라고 생각된다.
This study tried to analyze the relationships between the individual virtue and common virtue using the theories about individuals and communities which were proposed by the two influential preqin period thinkers, Confucian and Motze. Confucian and Motze basically hold in high estimation in human dignity and worth. They set high value on individual pursuit of happiness and self-realization. And they also think highly of common interests, norms and values. In other words, they both tried to seek balance and harmony between the individual virtue and common virtue as follow. First, when we compare the basic characteristics and purposes of moral training of Mohism and Confucianism, they are so similar that it is very difficult to differentiate the two theories. They both regard building individual moral character as a means to make common virtue which is pursued by community. Second, the individuals who have both talents and virtues make idealistic community and also they lead it and influence the life and death of the community. So, they thought that the community assures the growth and self-realization of individuals who have talent and moral character. The individuals devote themselves to the community, and the communities are respectful of individual values, and they tried to promote the organic relationships. When we consider the two theories which suggested desirable shape of an individual and a community, although it is thought that there is a little difference in the way of realizing the harmony of individual virtue and common virtue, their main points are the same. It is because both theories are complement and closely tied to each other in its’ insists about individual and community.
