이 논문에서는 국어사전 연구에서 논의된 전문어 처리 원칙을 준용하여 종교 용어의 처리 문제에 접근하였고, 국어사전에서 종교 용어를 다뤄 온 방식을 평가하면서 이를 근거로 종교 용어의 처리 방안을 제안하였다. 2장에서는 전문어 분류체계에서 종교 영역을 구획하는 문제를 논의하였다. 이를 위해 기존에 출판된 국어사전에서 종교 분야를 구획하는 양상을 검토하면서, 종교에 대한 한국어 공동체의 인식 체계를 반영하여 종교 영역의 분류체계를 설정해야만 종교 용어를 수집하고 선정하는 과정이 체계적으로 이루어질 수 있음을 지적하였다. 3장에서는 거시구조적 차원에서 종교 용어를 처리하는 방안을 모색하였다. 이를 위해 종교 표제어의 양적 적절성, 체계성, 균형성 등의 문제를 검토하고, 이러한 문제를 해결하는 방안으로 의미영역별 분류체계를 통한 표제어 선정 방안을 제안하였다. 이때 의미영역별 분류체계는 사전 내에서 종교 표제어의 체계성, 종교 간 표제어의 균형성, 그리고 특정 종교 표제어의 양적 적절성을 판단하는 기준이 될 수 있다. 4장에서는 미시구조적 차원에서 종교 용어를 처리하는 방안을 모색하였다. 이를 위해 기존 사전에서 뜻풀이와 관련하여 사용역과 관련어를 제시하는 양상을 검토하고, 실제 언어 사용 양상을 반영하여 사용역과 관련어를 제시해야 할 필요성과 그 실현 방안을 모색하였다. 이와 관련하여 사용역을 조정하면서 종교 용어를 다의적으로 기술하는 방안, 종교 용어 간 관련성을 보여주면서 뜻풀이의 우선순위를 결정하는 방안 등이 제안되었다.

This study made an approach to the treatment issues of religious terms by applying the treatment principles of technical terms discussed in the researches of Korean dictionaries and proposed treatment methods for religious terms based on the results by evaluating the ways that religious terms had been handled in Korean dictionaries. The study followed the following order in its discussions: Chapter 2 discussed the issue of dividing the domain of religion in the classification system of technical terms. It pointed out the process of collecting and selecting religious terms could be systematic only by reviewing the division patterns of domain of religion in the old Korean dictionaries, reflecting the perception system of religions among the Korean community, and setting a classification system for the domain of religion. The chapter also proposed a set of criteria to assess the popularity and historicity of religion. Chapter 3 searched for ways to treat religious terms in a macroscopic aspect, thus reviewed the quantitative fitness, systemicity, and balance of religious headwords and proposing plans to select headwords based on a classification system by the areas of meanings to solve the issues. Chapter 4 searched for ways to treat religious terms in a microscopic aspect, thus reviewing the patterns of proposing registers and related terms with regard to the definitions of old dictionaries and exploring a need to propose registers and related terms and its fulfillment plans by reflecting the patterns of actual language usage.
