본 연구는 김수영 시에 나타난 한자어의 사용 양상과 그 의미를 살펴보고자 하였다. 그 동안 잘못 해석되어 온 한자어의 의미를 바로잡아 해석의 근거를 마련하였다. 또한 주요하게 사용되는 한자어의 면모와 시적 효과를 살펴봄으로써 시어로서 한자어 사용 양상과 시세계의 연관성을 당대의 문화적 배경을 참조하여 해명하고자 하였다. 한자어의 빈번한 사용이 시를 관념적으로 떨어뜨릴 것 같지만 김수영의 한자어는 다양한 시적 효과를 거느리며 구체적인 형상성에 기여하는 경우가 많다. 이러한 역설은 그의 시어 운용에 한자어가 많이 사용되더라도 말의 진실성이라는 기준이 작용하고 있다는 점을 말해준다. 즉 한자어나 한문 구절에 드러난 난해함은 언어의 추상성과 구체성을 연결 짓는 일과 관련되어 있는 것으로 보인다. 또한 김수영이 시어로 사용한 한자어는 사전에 등재되지 않은 말이거나 일상생활에서는 다소 낯선 표현을 포함하고 있다. 그는 시의 격에 맞게 시어를 선별하고 변형하여 사용하였다. 김수영에게는 ‘세대’에 대한관념과 의식이 있었던 것으로 보인다. 너무 앞서거나 뒤서지 않으면서도 한 시절을 향한 ‘사랑’과 ‘애정’을 발견하는 일이 그의 시작에 과제처럼 주어졌던 것이다.
This study seeks to establish a basis and validity of interpretation by examining the frequency of Chinese characters and amending their signification, which has been falsely interpreted in the past. In investigating the application and the poetic effects of Chinese characters, the study also attempts to explain the connection between the way in which poetic words are used and the poetic world by referring to the cultural background of the time. The frequent use of Chinese characters may take poetry to the brink of becoming abstract, but Kim Su-yeong’s Chinese characters have diverse poetic effects and often contribute to the concrete shaping of his work. This paradox reveals that, although Chinese characters are often used in his application of poetic language, veracity of speech acts on his work as a yardstick. In other words, the abstruseness emerging from Chinese characters or passages of Chinese characters appears to be related to the linking of the abstractness and concreteness of language. Moreover, the Chinese characters used by Kim Su-yeong as poetic language are either not to be found in the dictionary or include expressions that are not commonly used. He carefully selected, modified, and used poetic words in accordance with the quality of a poem. It seems Kim Su-yeong had a concept and awareness of his “generation.” The work of discovering the “love” and “affection” for those “times” without getting too far ahead or falling too far behind was assigned as a task for his poetry.
