설화 문학의 환생 모티프는 공동체의 원형적인 상상력을 담고 있다. 이 글에서는 향가 설화 문학과 서사 무가, 민간 설화 등을 중심으로 환생모티프가 어떤 모습을 띠고 나타나고 있으며 그것의 문학적 의미는 무엇인지 알아보았다. 이어 이러한 환생 모티프를 자신의 시에 수용하여 현대적으로 재창조하고 있는 시인으로 김소월, 서정주, 박재삼, 신경림, 최정례의 시들을 살펴보았다. 김소월은 민간 설화적 상상력에 기대어 주술적 리듬을 계승하는 한편, ‘새’를 매개로 한 영혼의 청각적 심상을 구현하였다. 서정주는 신라의 향가 설화에 나타나는 불교적인 윤회전생 사상의 입장에서 환생 모티프를 수용하는 경우인데, 죽음을 새로운 생성의 원리로 치환하면서 끊임없이 반복되는 인연의 아름다움을 보여준다. 박재삼은 소월과 미당의 전통을 수용하면서 재생하는 ‘혼’의 시각적 이미지와 ‘한’의 결정으로 나타나는 식물 환생 모티프를 보여주었다. 신경림의 시적 형식은 일종의 진혼굿과도 같다. 그의 시들은 민중의 혼이 ‘원귀’로 재생됨을 표현하며, 환생 설화의 모티프와 서사구조가 역사의식과 결합되고 있다. 최정례는 설화적 형식을 차용하여 삶의 숙명적 한계와 반복성이 주는 쓸쓸한 기시감을 보여주었으며 이는, 재생의 욕망이라는 전통의 문학적 정서와 닿아 있다. 이 글에서 살펴 본 설화 문학의 환생 모티프와 변용 양상은, 전통의 형식과 상상력을 접목하여 현대시의 창조적인 형식을 확립한 여러 시인들의 작업과 그 의미를 비교하여 볼 수 있는 사례다.

Rebirth motif of narrative literature has prototype imagination. In this paper I represent the aspect of rebirth motif and its literary meaning in diverse texts such as hyangga, narrative shaman song, folklore and old novels. And as the modern poetic recreation of rebirth motif, I review the poetry of Gim Soweol, Seo Jeongju, Bak Jaesam, Sin Gyeongrim and Choi Jeongrye. Based upon folklore imagination, Gim successes the traditional shaman rhythm and poetically realizes the acoustic imagery of soul. Adopting hyangga``s Buddhist idea, Seo represents the poetic beauty of endless nidana. Inheriting Seo and Gim``s traditional motif, Bak poetically represents the visual imagery of soul. In his poetry, Sin embrace the form of traditional requiem exorcism. Rendering the form of folklore, Choi poetically represents the limit of human life and its gloomy deja-vu. Reviewing and comparing diverse poets on rebirth motif of narrative literature, show the grafting between the literary tradition and the creative imagination of modern poetry.
