이 논문에서는 ‘-ㅭ’의 음운적 환경과 분포, 문법적 역할에 따른 몇 가지 기능을 정리하고 이와 관련한 일부 문제점을 제시하였다. ‘ㆆ’은 형태소의 결합에서 실현되는 형태음소적 차원에서 논의되어야 하는데, 경음화에 사용되었으며 이 경우 ‘ㅅ’과의 연관성도 고려해야 한다. 또한 ‘ㆆ’과 ‘ㅅ’은 음가의 측면에서 유사한 점이 있고, 관형형에 ‘-ㄽ’이 쓰인 점과 복합어에 ‘-ㅭ’이 쓰인 점으로 미루어보아 사용상의 교점이 있었으나 그 사용 분포의 집중도를 살펴보면 분명한 기능상의 차이가 있었을 것이라 판단된다. 관형형에 쓰인 ‘-ㅭ’은 음운적 환경 이외에 쓰인 ‘ㆆ’의 기능을 설명해 줄 수 있는 단서이며 이를 바탕으로 ‘ㅅ’과의 차이점도 설명할 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 또한 관형형어미 ‘ㄴ’ 뒤에서는 ‘ㆆ’이 사용되지 않은 점도 눈여겨 볼 사항이다.

This study is to check out several functions of ‘-ㅭ’ in middle Korean. For this research, phonological environments of ‘-ㅭ’, and its distributions are discussed. ‘ㆆ’ of ‘-ㅭ’ should be researched in morphophonemic respects, and it is used in some tensed consonants. In this case, ‘ㆆ’ has some similarities with ‘ㅅ’. In addtion, ‘ㆆ’and ‘ㅅ’ has similarities in respects of phone values. ‘-ㄽ’ is used in adnominal forms and complex words, so ‘-ㄽ’ and ‘-ㅭ’ are considered to have some functional relations. ‘-ㅭ’ that are used in adnominal forms seem to be a clue of functions of ‘ㆆ’, and based on that assumption, differences between ‘ㆆ’ and ‘ㅅ’ could be found out. No appearance of ‘ㆆ’ after adnominal ending of ‘ㄴ’ is to be pondered either.
