이 연구는 개방형 한국어 지식대사전에서 구축한 전문 용어를 대상으로 각각의 전문 용어와 함께 쓰이는 동의어들의 형태·의미적 특징을 살펴보고 용어의 동기화를 위한 요소들을 점검해 보고자 한다. 전문 용어는 번역할 때 어종 선택에 따라, 용어의 사용 환경에 따라 다양한 형태의 용어변형이 일어난다. 전문 용어 표제어와 동의어들 간의 어휘 표현 방식을 비교해 보면 전문 용어를 만드는 조어 방식을 파악할 수 있을 것이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 전문 용어 사전에 수록된 『의학』, 『약학』, 『생물』전문 용어들의 동의어군을 추출하여 동의어들의 표현 방식을 비교하여 살펴보고 동의어들의 형태·의미적 특징을 정리해 보았다. 동의어 비교 분석 결과 전문 용어 표제어와 동의어 간의 어종 형태별 특징은 외래어와 한자어 관계, 외래어와 고유어 관계, 외래어와 약어 관계, 한자어와 고유어 관계로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 전문 용어의 동의어들은 주로 용어가 번역될 때 만들어지는데, 외래어를 풀어쓰거나 비활성 한자어를 고유어화 시키는 어종 변화 특징을 보여 주었다. 동의어 간의 의미적 특징은 외래어의 음역이 동기화를 방해하므로 음역의 설명적 풀이 방식이 가장 많이 나타났다. 그 외에도 낱말의 의미적 압축을 위해서 은유 방식이 나타나기도 하고 모호한 의미의 어휘를 고정하는 방식도 있었다. 표제어와 동의어를 비교 분석하는 것은 전문 용어의 조어 방식을 위하여 동기화가 잘된 사례들을 확인할 수 있는 바탕 연구 방법이 될 수 있을 것이다.
