Many writers, in their writing processes, naturally confront writing blocks, and which has been a firm area for a research since 1950s. However, in South Korea, there was not enough academic interest on this psychological phenomenon. To promote both academic research and educators` instructional interest in writing block, this study synthesized major findings and various issues related with writing block. Specifically, this study focused on three major synthesis works. First, various academic terms confused with writing block were reviewed and the definition of writing block was articulated. Second, major causes and instructional treatment to alleviate the difficulties of writing block were reviewed and discussed. Third, six major categories and specific examples for research were newly organized based on the various dimensions, factors, and types in the academic field of writing block. In addition, some research ideas and implications for further research were suggested for both writing researchers and educators.
