본고는 그간 김말봉 연구에서 배제되었던 장편소설 『꽃과 뱀』(1949)을 원환적 서사구조와 신화적 상징성의 측면으로 접근하여 분석하고자 한다. 『꽃과 뱀』이 취하고 있는 원환의 구조는 종교적 구원의 메시지와 긴밀하게 만난다. 즉 원환의 구조 속에서 『꽃과 뱀』의 서사는 운명론적으로 반복, 순환되는 인간의 삶과 그 업보의 윤회를 말한다. 또한 원환적 서사구조는 개별적인 사건들이 지닌 우연성을 하나의 주제로 수렴한다는 측면에서 이 작품이 노정하는 우연성의 과잉이라는 플롯의 결함을 상쇄하는 기능을 담당한다. 『꽃과 뱀』은 선악의 대결구도 대신 현실과 운명의 대결구도를 취하고 이를 신화와 종교의 차원으로 넘긴다. 『꽃과 뱀』의 주제와 정조는 철저히 무시간성과 신화·종교적 상징의 차원에 놓인다. 인물들의 합일과 구원욕망은 역사적 현실을 넘어선 유토피아적 공간을 꿈꾼다. 죽음을 통해서만 진정한 합일과 구원에 도달할 수 있다고 믿는 것이 『꽃과 뱀』을 관통하는 상상력의 요체이다.

The purpose of this study is analysis of the structure of circle and mythological symbol in The flower and snake(1949) of Kim Mal-bong``s novel. The Multiflora(Chile flower) represents Korean popular novel, and most studies are concentrated on this work. The Multiflora(Chile flower) contains corrupt reality of 1930``s, especially the sexual desire and fetishism. So this is her masterpiece and a representative work of 1930``s novel, and many people also have thought so. But owing tosuch tendency, her other works have been neglected for a long time. In the latter she wrote many popular novel, and of course these works have to be studied and analyzed very carefully. So this study``s object is analyzing the narrative structure and seizing the meaning of The flower and snake. This novel represents the latter period work of Kim Mal-bong. The flower and snake shows the way to overcome confused reality and society through the borrowing structure of circle and mythological set. The ultimate subject of this novel is to relieve andunite two main characters.
