본 연구는 시사 토의 담화를 사회언어학적 관점에서 분석하여 사회자의 관여 전략과 토의자의 협력의 원리 사용 양상을 살펴보는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 시사 토의 담화의 특성과 시사 토의 담화의 구조를 살펴보았다. 그리고 텔레비전에서 방영된 4편의 시사 토의 자료를 전사하여 담화 자료를 분석하였다. 자료 분석 결과, 사회자의 관여 전략으로 ‘절차에 따른 진행, 논지의 명확화, 중립성 전략, 개인적 느낌 제시’가 나타났다. 또 토의자의 협력 원리로 ‘그라이스의 협력 원리 및 브라운과 레빈슨의 예의 이론’의 구체적인 양상이 나타났다. 본고는 지금까지 비교적 연구가 활발하게 이루어진 토론 담화와 달리, 연구가 희박한 토의 담화를 텔레비전 시사 토의 담화 자료를 대상으로 실증적으로 분석하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 그러나 이를 교육적으로 활용하기 위해서는 토의 담화에 대한 더 많은 후속 연구가 필요하다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the aspects of a moderator’s involvement strategies and a discussant’s cooperative principle. This is done by using an interactional sociolinguistic analysis of current affairs discussion. For this purpose, thecharacteristics and structures of these programs are studied by transcribing and analysing four different current affair discussion programs on TV. The analysis concludes that the moderator’s involvement strategies include conducting by procedures, clarification of arguments, neutrality strategies, and presenting individual feelings. The discussant’s cooperative principle include detailed aspects of Grice’s Cooperative principle and Brown & Levinson’s Politeness theory. The value of this study is an empirical analysis of current affairs discussion that few studies investigate, while many other studies deal with debate studies. However, further studies with more data are needed for educational application.
