최적통화지역(OCA)이론은 Mundell (1961)의 선구적인 연구업적 이후 오랜 기간 동안 경제학자들의 연구의 대상이 되어 왔다. 특히, 유러화 출범과 아시아 금융위기는 동아시아 지역을 포함하여 최적통화지역 이론을 재조명하는 계기를 제공하였으며 최근의 글로벌 금융위기로 달러를 대체할 기축통화에 대한 논의도 이루어지고 있다. 최적통화지역에 대한 전통적인분석은 일반적으로 환율정책의 포기로 발생하는 거시경제 비용과 거래비용 등의 감소로 인한 미시부문의 이익의 균형에 대한 분석이 주를 이루고 있으며 최근의 비판적인 연구들도 전통적인 분석을 훼손하기 보다는 새로운 최적통화지역 분석 기준에 대한 논의를 제공하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 최적통화지역의 비용·편익분석과 함께 선행연구들을 소개하고 있다.

The interest in the theory of optimum currency area (OCA) has waxed and waned over the years after the pioneering contribution of Mundell (1961). The commencement of the euro in Europe and the surge of Asian and recent global financial crisis renewed attention to the theory of OCA and gave an impetus to other region - e.g. East Asia - in pursuit of monetary integration. Recently, there are discussions for a key currency instead of dollar after global financial crisis. Traditional analysis of OCA has typically been conceived in terms of balancing the micro benefits against the macroeconomic costs of giving up the exchange rate. Recent development in OCA attempts to analysis down to one or a few key criteria however, criticisms do not undermine the OCA approach, but add to the number of considerations that are relevant and influence the weights which should be given to different considerations.
