Intercultural way of thinking is a form of global cultural ability, and the competency in question can be built in various ways. Reading and writing in the general education of the university can be an adequate method for enhancing such competency. When it comes to reading and writing designed to increase the intercultural competency, the following principles are important: (i) choosing a suitable text, (ii) proper reading methods based on empathy, reflection, and comparison, (iii) the method of meta-comparativity aimed at decentralizing the preconceived criteria of comparison, (iv) dialogical arguments that draw a dialectical conclusion from the contradictory premises in conflicting cultures. This form of intercultural reading and writing applies to a university writing class, through the familiar media such as movies dealing with the difference, conflict, and solution between two cultures. Thus considered, the cinema < If you die > which concerns the difference between funeral ceremonies in France and Islam can be an example in which reflecting one`s own culture, understanding other cultures, grasping the similarities and differences, having a stance toward cultural difference are exercised. Intercultural reading and writing can be an indirect yet effective means for confronting the cultural differences. But the establishment of its methods and competency criteria is in need of further studies. This research, as an introduction to intercultural competency education, has a significance that diversifies writing education in the globalized age.
