≪Moojung≫ and The Ethics of Modern Society

This thesis aims to analyze the ethics and social norms of modern society focusing on Lee, Kwang-soo``s novel, ≪Moojung≫(1917). From late 19c to early 20c, Choseon society faced radical changes. Ethics and social norms which regulated individuals lost their position which they had before by failed to keep up with the changes of real life. Reactionism and radicalism arose at the same time at the same place. In other words, the whole society was plunged in confusion. Lee, Kwang-soo had sharp insight into social situation. ≪Moojung≫ which appeared in ≪Mae-ilsinbo≫ from January to June of 1917, is filled with writers intension for laying the cornerstone of new ethics and social norms in a transition period. This study analyzes the intension of Lee, Kwang-soo by focusing on ``sympathy(dong-jeong)``, and ``nationalism``. Two main purpose of this article are: First, the method of Lee, Kwang-soo that understanding ethical deadlock which Choseon faced. This is also related to define ethics and norms of modern society. Second, reconsider Young-Chae``s narrative which leads the plot of ≪Moojung≫.
