훈민정음은 태생적(胎生的)으로 세 가지의 보편적 가치를 내재(內在)하고 있다. 첫째는 민주성, 둘째는 과학성, 셋째는 철학성이다. 훈민정음의 민주성은 민주(民主)에 담긴 뜻 그대로 백성이 주인이 되는 문자의 속성을 뜻한다. 이 점은 훈민정음 어제(御製) 서문에 잘 드러나 있으며, 이것이 훈민정음이 내재하고 있는 민주성의 근거이다. 훈민정음의 과학성은 음성학적인 관찰과 체계적 제자 원리로 글자를 만들었다는 점이다. 초성(자음)의 기본자 5개는 음성학적 관찰에 근거한 음성기관의 상형을 통해 만들었다. 기본자에 획을 더하여(가획) 다른 초성 글자를 만들었다. 이 가획도 ``소리가 거세지는 정도``에 따라 이루어졌기 때문에 음성학적인 근거를 갖고 있다. 중성(모음) 글자는 혀를 움츠린[舌縮] 정도에 따라 정해진 기본자 세 개에서 출발한다. 이 기본자 세 개를 서로 합성하여 다른 중성 글자를 만들었다. 이와 같이 훈민정음이 음성학적인 분석은 물론, 가획법과 합성법이라는 체계적인 제자 원리로 만들어진 문자라는 점이 바로 과학성의 근거이다. 훈민정음의 철학성은 훈민정음의 제자 원리에 작용한 성리학의 원리인 삼재론, 음양론, 오행론, 상수론에서 나타난다. 삼재론은 천지(天地=자연)와 사람의 조화로운 관계를 지향하는 사상이다. 음양오행론도 우주를 이루는 다섯 가지 근본 요소의 상호 결합과 조화가 만물 운행의 이치라고 보는 사상이다. 상수론은 주역의 괘효를 숫자를 결합하여 표현한 방법이다. 글자를 만들 때 활용된 철학적인 원리들은 훈민정음 해례에 기술되어 있다. 이것이 훈민정음이 철학성을 내재하고 있다는 근거이다.

Hunmin jeongeum holds three intrinsically universal values: democracy, science and philosophy. The democracy of Hunmin jeongeum refers to one of the properties of the character that people are the owner of the character as literally indicated by democracy. This is well demonstrated by the preface of the King`s writing, which is the basis for democracy inherent in Hunmin jeongeum. Next, the science of Hunmin jeongeum is supported by that fact that it was created by phonological observations and scientific principles. First, the five basic consonants were created based on phonological characteristics. A single stroke is added to these consonants to produce other consonants. Adding a single stroke is based on the phonological principle in that it was conducted according to the ``extent of sound getting stronger``. Creation of vowels started from three basic characters determined based on the degree of retraction tongue root(舌縮). And a full set of vowels were created by combining these three characters. That Hunmin jeongeum was created based on not only phonological analysis but also systematic character-creating principle serves as the basis for scientific excellence of Hunmin jeongeum. Last but not least, the philosophy of Hunmin jeongeum comes from the basic principles of neo-Confucianism applied to creating the characters, including Samjae theory, Yin and Yang theory(陰陽論), Five Elements theory(五行論) and Sangsu theory(象數論). Samjae theory(三才論) is in pursuit of a harmonious relationship between heaven and earth (nature) and humans. The Yin-Yang and the Five Elements theory believes that interdependence and harmony of five fundamental elements that comprise the universe is the divine order of nature and humanity. The Sangsu theory refers to the symbolization of Gua-Yao of Ju Yeok combined with numbers. And the Haerye Edition of Hunmin jeongeum explains the fact that philosophical considerations were made in creating the characters, which serves the basis for philosophical implications inherent in Hunmin jeongeum.
