현재 한반도 통일문제와 관련된 민족정체성 논의에는 한편으로 민족ㆍ민족주의에 대한 긍정 속에서 통일을 위해 생래적으로 주어진 민족정체성을 어떻게 유지하고 강화해갈 것인지를 묻는 흐름과, 다른 한편으론 민족ㆍ민족주의에 대한 비판과 함께 통일한반도의 정체성을 민족이 아닌 다른 것들로 구성하자는 흐름이 공존하고 있다. 이러한 배경과 함께 본 논문은 1990년대 이후 현재까지 남북의 철학문헌에서 드러나는 민족ㆍ민족주의 이해의 특징을 비교함으로써 남북 민족ㆍ민족주의 이해의 최종적 ``결과``가 무엇인지를 확인한다. 특히남북의 민족ㆍ민족주의가 ``원심력적 분산``과 ``구심력적 수렴``의 양상으로 전개되고 있으며, 최종적으로 상호적대적인 국민정체성이 강화되고 있음을 주장한다. 이러한 분석을 통해 본 논문은 민족정체성과 관련된 기존 논의를 비판하고 통일 과정 및 이후 민족정체성의 분열가능성과 그 해결방안을 시론적으로 제시하고 있다.

Currently, there are two schools of thought with regard to ethnic identity related to the issue of Korean reunification. One asks how to maintain and strengthen inherent ethnic identity for reunification pursuing nation and nationalism positively; the other insist on realizing the reunification of Korea by denying nation and nationalism and seeking other factors rather than ethnicity for its identity. Against this backdrop, this study identifies the ultimate ``concepts`` of the nation and nationalism in South and North Korea by comparing characteristics of the understanding of nation and nationalism as shown in South and North Korean philosophy books since the 1990s. In particular, the study claims that the nation and nationalism in South and North Korea have developed as ``divergence by centrifugal force`` and ``convergence by centripetal force,`` which has eventually strengthened national identity with mutual hostility. Through the analysis, it criticizes conventional discussions on ethnic identity and suggests reunification processes, the possibility of a split ethnic identity in the post-reunification period, and the countermeasures in detail.
