더블린(Dublin)을 중심에 두고 공간에 대한 입체적이고, 다양한 접근을 시도하고 있는 제임스 조이스(James Joyce)의 『율리시스』(Ulysses)와, 경성 변두리인 청계천 주변 공간을 중심으로 다양한 사람들의 삶의 모습을 포착하는 박태원의『천변풍경』은, 각양각색의 인물들이 집단적으로 등장하는 공동체적 공간을 부각시킨다는 점에서 공통점을 갖는다. 특히,『율리시스』에 등장하는 장례식장(6장)과 도서관(9장), 그리고『천변풍경』에 등장하는 빨래터(1절)와 혼례식장(5절)은 대표적인 공동체적 공간들이다. 제임스 조이스와 박태원은 공동체적 공간을 부각시킴으로써, 등장인물의 삶을 둘러싸고 있는 외부 사회의 정치적, 경제적, 사회적 측면을 다양한 층위에서 입체적으로 포착하고자 시도한다. 본 논문에서는 위에서 언급한 네 개의 공동체적 공간들에 대해서, 차이점과 유비적 특징을 보다 구체적으로 비교 분석하고자한다. 즉, 표면적인 층위에서 대조를 드러내는 “장례식장”과 “혼례식장,” “도서관”과 “빨래터”를 그 대조적 측면과 아울러, 이면의 공통적 요소들을 구체적으로 비교분석할 것이다. 더 나아가, 제임스 조이스와 박태원이 이러한 공동체적 공간의 활용을 통해두 텍스트의 중심 주제들을 어떻게 효과적으로 드러내는 지를 비교 분석할 것이다.

One of the common elements between Joyce``s Ulysses which focuses on the people in Dublin and Park Tae-won``s Cheonbyun PungKyoung which captures the diverse lives of people living along Cheonbyun is that both texts emphasize on the public spaces where the various people come together, naturally talk about the issues of their society, and reveal the comprehensive problems of it. Among those spaces, especially, the funeral place in "Hades" and the national library in "Scylla and Charybdis" of Ulysses, and the wedding place in the fifth chapter and the public laundry place in the first chapter of Cheonbyun PungKyoung are the most important ones. In this thesis, I compared the funeral place of Ulysses with the wedding place of Cheonbyun PungKyoung and the national library of the former with the public laundry place of the latter. Also, I analyzed how effectively both writers made use of those public places to reveal their main subjects such as imperial usurpation or colonial domination, the issue of adultery, and the social alienation or marginalization in the two texts.
