Building a foundation for the unification with North Korea should be based on a national consensus on the need for the unification. Yet, dreams of unification seem to fade into past for young South Koreans. Considering such public indifference, the development of unification education is crucial to enhance the unification awareness of Korean military personnel and consolidate unification ability amid heightened tensions with North. Unification education in military can contribute to raise the youth`s increasing awareness of the need for unification by making up for the insufficient unification education that schools and communities have done. Furthermore, the focus of unification education in military should be on sustaining the youth`s desire for Korean unification. This paper starts with exploring the unification awareness of Korean military personnel, and then analyzes the current state of unification education in Korean military. This paper concludes with suggesting strategies for developing unification education in military. That include effective educational methods, contents of education and substantive application for military.
