본 연구의 목적은 중국 방문 비자를 받은 북한 여성들의 경제활동 경험과 이로 인한 의식 변화를 고찰하는 것이다. 연구방법은 조중 접경지역에서 경제활동을 하고 있는 북한 여성 6명과 이들을 지원하는 전문활동가 5명을 심층면담하였다. 연구결과에 의하면, 북한 여성들은 주로 보모, 간병, 청소, 식당일 등을 하고 있었으며 임금의 대부분은 북으로 송금하고 있었다. 그들은 중국내 경제활동 경험을 통해 상품광고 등의 정보의 중요성, 노동의 가치와 고용, 임금협상, 수평적 사회관계속에서의 신용과 계약 등을 인식하였다. 또한 그들은 중국내 경제활동 경험을 통해 개인의 인식뿐만 아니라 북 사회를 변화시키고 있었다. 개인적인 차원에서는 기술 습득과 네트워크 활용 등으로 개인 역량 강화, 여권 신장에 대한 인식, 한국 사회에 대해 새롭게 인식하고 있었다. 북한 사회에 미치는 영향으로는 중국의 경제생활로 인한 상품 및 전략을 북한에 적용함으로써 장마당이 변화하고 새로운 서비스 산업이 발생하는 변화의 계기가 되었다. 이러한 연구결과를 토대로 중국에서의 북한 주민들에 대한 경제활동 경험의 의의와 남북 및 재외 한인 공동체의 협력 의의, 남북한 주민 통합을 위한 조선족 역할 등에 대한 함의를 제언하였다.

This examines what North Korean female migrant workers in China learn from their economic activities and how these activities bring the changes dimensionally in person and North Korea. The data were collected from structured interviews of six North Korean female migrant workers and five social activists in China and analyzed their narratives. According to results, they immigrated into China for making the money with visitor’s visa. Most of them made the money in China working as baby sitter, caregiver, cleaner, restraunt employee and so on and sent some part of wages back to their families living in North Korea. Through these experiences on market economic system in China, they understood the advertisement and information is very useful and significant to get a job. Also they realized newly the value of labor and employment and the significance of trust and credit in order to make cooperative relationship. These experiences of market economy brought several changes in person and in their home country, North Korea. Personally, these activities caused them to strengthen their capacities through they acquired professional skills and learned the way in which they build social relationship and networks in their field. Their perception on women’s right and South Korea was also changed newly. Their experiences changed their country, North Korea as well. Their knowledge acquired from the activities of market economy was applied to black market in North Korea. New products and service industry began to emerge recently in black market at North Korea by them. Ultimately, this paper shed light on how the market economic experiences of North Korean migrant workers in China can bring the building of the way to reduce cultural gap between North and South Korea and to achieve national unification based on mutual understanding.
