소재는 디자인에 영감을 일으키는 요소로서 직물에 창의성과 독특함을 구현하는 역할을 하며 현대 패션의 새로운 미학을이루는데 크게 기여하고 있다. 특히 플라스틱은 성형의 용이성과 인공적이면서도 아름다운 색감으로 패션디자인에서 표현영역의 확대를 가져왔으며 오늘날 다양한 새로운 미를 보여주고 있다. 본 연구는 플라스틱이 지닌 미적 조형성을 알아보기 위해 플라스틱의 역사와 특징, 그리고 디자인 영역에 등장한 배경과 영향에 대해 조사하고 이후 현대 패션디자인에서 플라스틱 소재를 활용한 패션의 의미를 분석하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 플라스틱은 20세기 이후 현대인의 라이프 스타일에서 새로운 소비문화를 주도하고 있는 소재로서 산업 영역뿐 아니라 현대미술에 이르기까지 다양한 분야에서기술적 변화와 발전이 이루어졌다. 현대 패션디자인에서 플라스틱이 가지는 의미를 살펴보면 첫째, 플라스틱을 재활용한소재 및 패션을 통해 환경오염을 일으키는 플라스틱에 친환경적인 의미를 부여하기 위한 새로운 모색을 하고 있다. 둘째, 다른 직물 소재가 갖고 있지 않은 플라스틱만의 다양한 장점들을 활용하여 미래지향적 기술미학을 반영하는 첨단 제작기법 및 디자인 소재활용을 보여주고 있다. 셋째, 플라스틱을 활용한 패션 디자인은 실제가 아닌 인공적이면서도 가짜와 같은 이미지를 주는데, 이러한 플라스틱의 저급한 이미지에서 유머와 재미를 유발하는 키치적 표현을 볼 수 있다. 이와 같이플라스틱은 첨단 의복 제작 기술의 발달과 의복에 대한 가치의 전환, 친환경을 위한 재활용 등의 트렌드 속에서 의복이 지닌 조형미를 다양화하고 독창적이고 새로운 디자인을 개발하는데 기여할 것이다.

As a factor for inspiring on design, material plays a role to embody creativity and unique characteristics on fabric, and contributes to express new aesthetics on modern fashion design. Specially, forming easiness and artificial beautiful color of plastic extend of expression area of fashion design, and show new various aesthetics during these days. This study researches the history, characteristics, background and influence of plastic on design to confirm the aesthetic formativeness of plastic. And also it investigates the formative meanings of plastic fashion. The conclusion is as follows. Plastic is the material leading the consumer culture appearing on the lifestyles of people since 20th century, and it changes and develops in various ares from industry to modern arts. The meanings of plastic in modern fashion are as follows. First, the fashion designs made of plastic mean new pursue for eco-friendly meaning to plastic causing environmental pollution through the utilization of plastic material and the recycled plastic fashion. Second, it shows the application of plastic material and high technology for making the clothes reflecting the future-oriented technological aesthetics through the use of plastic with the various advantage. Third, the plastic fashion designs give the artificial fake image, and which shows the kitsch expression causing humor and fun from low grade images. Thus plastics will contribute to develop the new unique design, and vary the aesthetic formativeness of clothes in fashion trend such as the use of plastic recycling for eco-friendly consumer culture, the conversion of value about clothes, and the development of cutting-edge clothing and apparel production technology.
