이 글은 19세기 소설론 논의 양상을 한문 장편소설 작자와 동료들, 『남가록』 작자, 평비소설 작자와 평비자 세 부류로 나누고, 소설론을 전개하게 된 계기와 관심사, 소설의 문체와 정체성 탐구, 소설에 대한 인식, 소설의 창작 동기와 주제 구현 네 가지 측면에서 살펴보았다. 논의를 통해 19세기 소설론의 장(場)은 다음과 같은 의미를 지님을 알 수 있었다. 그들은 자신들의 견문, 문예적 지향과 취향 등을 바탕으로 각기 다른 측면에서 소설의 성격을 규정하려 하였다. 그래서 소설론 전개의 계기와 관심사, 소설에 대한 인식 등에서 서로다른 면모를 보였다. 세 부류 모두 소설을 자신들의 관점에서 개별적으로 규정하였던 바, ``소설에 대한 개별적 규정의 장``이라고 할 만하다. 또한 이는 보편적 양식으로서 ``소설``에 대한 가치를 인식하고 인정한 것이 아니라, 세상에 유행하는 수많은 소설 가운데 자신들의 집단에서 나온 소설 정도만이 가치있다는, 철저한 구별짓기 의식을 드러낸 것이다. 그래서 ``가치 있는 소설의 기준 확립과 구별짓기의 장``이었다고 할 수 있다. 그렇지만, 소설 창작의 기반, 소설 문장의 운용, 소설의 문체와 본질, 윤리적 감계가 뒷받침된 주제 구현 등의 측면에서는 공통된 입장을 드러내는 경우도 많았다. 그래서 그들은 결코 의도하지 않았지만 ``소설이라는 문체의 성격을 확립한 장``으로서 기능했다. 결국 19세기 소설론의 장(場)은 비록 부류들 간에 소설에 대한 의견 교환이 이루어지지는 않았지만, 각기 다른 관점에서 소설이라는 문체를 탐구하여 규정하고 그 가치를 놓고 각축을 벌이던 장이었다고 할 수 있다.

After dividing the aspects of debate on 19th century`s novel theories into three groups : full-length Chinese-character novel writers and their colleagues; Namgarok writer; and reviewed novel writers and reviewers, this paper explored them from 4 perspectives : reason to develop novel theories and main concerns; exploration of the writing style and identity of novels; perception about novel; and motive of creating novels and realization of themes. Through this study, it was found that the field (場) of the 19th century`s novel theories contained following significance; They tried to define the characteristics of novel from different angles based on their own experience, literary orientation and preference. Eventually they showed different perspectives each other in their reason to develop novel theories, main concerns and perception about novel. As all of three groups defined novels in their own view individually, it deserves to be called "Field of individual definition about novel". This also revealed their thorough distinction concept that only the novels from their own groups were worthy among numerous novels that dominates the world at that time rather than their recognition of then value of ``novel`` as an universal form. Therefore, it could be considered as ``a field of establishing the criteria for valuable novel and distinguishing them each other``. However, in many cases, they showed common stands in the aspects such as realization of themes supported by the foothold of novel writing, the utilization of novel phrases, the writing style and essence of novel and ethical examples. Hence, even though they never intended, it functioned as a field that established the characteristic of writing style (or format) called ``novel``. After all, in the field of the 19th century`s novel theories, opinion exchange on novel among the groups was not made but it was deemed to be a field that explored and defined the writing style or format from different aspects and debated for their values.
