조선후기의 주요한 사상이었던 춘추대의, 위정척사, 중화, 소중화 등은 서로 연관성이 있기 때문에, 상호관계 속에서 파악해야 그 개념을 명확하게 이해할 수 있다. 이 논문은 화서학파의 이론가 유중교의 저술을 통하여 이 네 개념을 설명한 것이다. 춘추대의는 공자의 『춘추』에서 나와 중화를 높이고 이적을 물리칠 것을 주장하는 사상으로, 병자호란 후 완성되었다. 위정척사는 『맹자』에서 나와 정학(正學)을 지키고 사학(邪學) 을 물리칠 것을 주장하는 사상으로, 18세기 이후 서학(西學)의 유행에 대응하여 대두된 사상이다. 이 두 사상이 표방하는 바는 차이가 있지만, 근본적으로 추구한 것은 중화다. 중화는 삼강오상, 예악, 제도 등 중국고대의 이상적인 문화를 말한다. 명의 멸망과 동시에 중국에서 중화문화가 사라지자, 조선의 사대부들은 오직 조선에만 남은 중화문화의 맥을 잘 보존하여 장차 꽃피워야 한다고 생각했는데, 이것이 소중화사상이다. 유중교는 오직 중화문화만이 세상에 질서와 평화를 지켜줄 수 있다고 생각하여, 중화문화 지상주의를 부르짖었다. 그에게 국가는 그 다음문제였고, 민족은 애초에 그 개념조차 없었다.

Justice of the Spring and Autumn Annals[春秋大義], Wijong-Ch`oksa(defending orthodoxy and rejecting heterodoxy 衛正斥邪), Junghwa[中華], Little Junghwa[小中華] were key ideas in the late Joseon Dynasty. In this paper I attempted to define these ideas by using Lyu Joongkyo[柳重敎]`s Works(『省齋集』). Lyu was a representative theorist of Hwaso School in the late 19th century. Justice of the Spring and Autumn Annals which derived from "The Spring and Autumn Annals"(『春秋』) is the idea that maintains the respect of Junghwa and the repellence of barbarians. Wijong-Ch`oksa which derived from "The Mencius"(『孟子』) is the idea that maintains the defense of orthodoxy and the rejection of heterodoxy. The former was formed after the Manchu war of 1636, and the latter came to the fore after the inflow of Western learning in 18th century. Both idea fundamentally pursued the Junghwa. The Junghwa is an ideal culture of ancient China which comprises morality, propriety, music, law, and institution. After the Junghwa went out of existence with the fall of the Ming Dynasty, the Scholar-officials of the Joseon Dynasty tried to preserve a beam of hope of the Junghwa left in Joseon. This is so-called the Little Junghwa.
