The main objective of this paper is to bring to light the fact that the early literary works of Yoem Sang-seop were structured focusing on ``self-revolution.`` ``Self-revolution`` is a historical concept that Yoem constructed from the process of arguing with at least 3 discourses. One concept was that of individualism which was spread through the magazine Hakjigwang, another was anarchism, and lastly there was the concept of Dostoevsky and Nietzsche`s Superman. Early in his career, Yoem Sang-seop distanced himself from Hakjigwang`s moderate understanding of ``self-revolution``, aligning himself more with the anarchist tendencies of Samkwang which stressed simultaneous inner and outer liberation. He uses Stirner to formulate ``self-revolution`` as an ``insurrection against all authority and the destruction of all fixed ideas.`` Around this time, Yoem, a labour activist turn author, borrows the necessary form for narrativizing self-revolution from the works of Dostoevsky and Nietzsche who themselves inquired into the issue of ``self-overcoming.`` He invokes an amalgamation of Nietzsche and Dostoevsky in "Dark Night". The scene where the main character kisses the ground comes straight out of Dostoevsky, but here the ground, meaning ``life``, is contrasted with the sky and favors Nietzsche. "The Tree-frog in the Specimen-room" is a story which reflects the ``optics of the sick`` by attempting to use a madman`s life to overcome nihilism. Nihilism is overcome through a Stirnerian process of ``criticism`` of dominant values and a Nietzschean view of ``self-uprising`` as result of tragic experiences. Yoem implements ``self-revolution`` in his story "New Year`s Eve" borrowing Raskolnikov`s ``crossing borders`` and is shown in Choi Jeong-In`s attempts to resist and overcome traditional institution of marriage. The independence Choi Jeong-In found through ``self-revolution`` is completed as her husband`s forgiveness allows her to be reborn.
