‘계모’는 동서양을 막론하고 일부일처제 사회 어디에서나 존재한다. ‘계모(繼母)’는 시대상을 반영하는 봉건시대 가족제도의 산물이면서 동시에 신화적 혹은 설화적인 인물일 수 있다.‘계모형 설화’는 전실 자식 간의 갈등을 주된 내용으로 삼으면서 설화속 출현하는 계모들 역시 가족 관계 안에서 자신의 자리를 확인하고, 그에 부합하는 정체성을 확립하고자 시도하였다. 다만 그것이 평범하거나 일상적이지 않은 비정상적인 방법을 보여주고 있다. 계모는 아내로서, 어머니로서 정당한 대우를 받지 못함으로써 가족 구성원이 되지 못했는데,여기에 동의하지 않고 분노함으로써 계모가 영입된 가정의 문제를 노출시켰던 것이다. ‘계모형 설화’에 나타난 계모의 시도는 결론적으로 본다면 실패로 돌아가고 만다. 독자들은 계모에 대한 고정 관념으로 인해 서사 속에 형상된 계모의 죽음을 끝내 가족 간의 살인이 아닌, ‘흉녀(凶女)’의 처단으로 수용함으로써 계모에 대한 고정 관념을 더욱 고착(固着)시킨다. ‘계모형 설화’는 단순히 계모와 전처 자식들의 갈등으로 계모는 물론 본처의 자식, 혹은 기출 모두가 목숨을 잃는 극단적인 모습을 보여준다. 비극의 결과는 가족 구성원의 죽음으로 인한 회복할 수 없는 가정의 붕괴였다. ‘계모형 설화’에 나타난 죽음은 결국 비극의 결말이다. 이를 방지하기 위해서 아버지는 계모와 자식들 사이에 생길 수 있는 갈등을 조정해야 하며, 전처의 자식들은 계모를 친어머니의 자리를 빼앗는다는 부정적인 관점을 재고할 필요가 있다. 아울러 계모 역시 전처 자식들의 처지를 이해하고 그들과 우호적인 관계를 맺기 위한 노력이 필요하다는것을 염두에 두어야 한다.

‘Stepmother’ exists in the monogamy society, regardless of East or West. ‘Stepmother’ is a product of a family system in the feudal age reflecting the image of the times as well as a mythical or fictional character. ‘Stepmother Tale’ attempted to confirm a position stepmother who is a character in a tale within the family relationship and establish her identity in conformity to that position, touching conflicts with children of a previous mother as its main contents. However, it presents a uncommon, unordinary and abnormal method. A stepmother cannot become a family member because she is not fairly treated as a wife and mother, and thus the story exposes a problem of the family having a stepmother by refusing to accepting such position and becoming angry. An attempt by a stepmother represented in ‘Stepmother Tale’ ends up failure to the end. Readers fixed stereotype toward a stepmother by accepting a death of the stepmother presented in the story as a punishment of a bad woman, not murder within a family, due to their stereotype toward a stepmother. ‘Stepmother Tale’ presented an extreme situation where a stepmother, children of a previous mother or her own children lose their life due to the simple conflicts between the stepmother and children of a previous mother. The result of a tragedy was the collapse of a family that cannot be recovered due to the death of family members. In order to prevent such result, a father should mediate conflicts that may occur between a stepmother and children, and the children of a previous mother should re-consider a negative point of view that a stepmother takes position of their blood mother. In addition, a stepmother should understand the position of the children of a previous mother and keep in mind that they need to make efforts in establishing a friendly relationship with their stepmother.
